POSITION PURPOSE SUMMARY:
The Cook prepares and delivers nutritious meals as outlined in menus in accordance with applicable food service and safety regulations.
ACCOUNTABILITIES:
The incumbent may perform all, some, or similar range of duties.
Food Services:Plan, prepare and serve attractive, nutritious, tasty meals, according to the prepared menu plans, ensuring that meals are prepared, packaged if necessary, and either served on canteen truck or in the dining room.
Be aware of/accommodate any special dietary needs.
Prepare ongoing food supply orders for purchase according to menus.
Receive, check, and store food and supplies according to product instructions.
All meals will be prepared following Canada's Food Guide.
Ensure all leftover food is stored in the appropriate manner and ensure older stock is used first.
Provide direction and supervision to staff/ volunteers working in the Pantry and Kitchen areas.
Oversee and support scheduled volunteers, demonstrate work methods, and ensure they work together to enhance the ministries of The Salvation Army.
Participates in scheduled job-related training as required.
Health and Safety:Ensure food handler requirements are adhered to at all times by anyone working in or entering the kitchen.
Ensure that the Department of Health and Fire regulations are adhered to in the kitchen and food storage areas and other areas of the building.
Check/record refrigerator and freezer temperatures; maintain cleanliness of all equipment, drawers, and cupboards and clean food preparation areas, cooking surfaces, and utensils.
Follow guidelines for the safety and security of food and equipment and monitor practices to ensure adherence.
Monitor and maintain kitchen equipment, report any equipment issues to supervisor.
Maintain sanitation, hygiene, health and safety standards and safe handling of foods while performing duties.
Report to the Director and new equipment that is required or broken equipment, which needs to be repaired or replaced.
Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army's health and safety policies and procedures.
Communication:Communicates clearly with other staff members and/or volunteers regarding food service and food safety in a positive and encouraging manner as they assist in providing service to guest.
Maintains Product, service and market knowledge
Always treat guests and other staff with respect and dignity
May provide in-scope supervision and advice to fellow workers, students and/or volunteers, especially in Director's absence.
Perform other work-related duties as assigned.
FINANCIAL AND MATERIAL MANAGEMENT:Assist with food management, complete food inventories, donations/product flow and distribution.
Works within assigned budget.
Required to pick-up food supplies for program.

WORKING CONDITIONS:This is a permanent full-time position based on 37.5 hours per week.
Schedule may vary according to requirements of responsibilities, flexibility in schedule is required.
Ability to lift/move on a regular basis up to 25 pounds.
This job requires reaching, bending, and stooping frequently, working in a standing position for long periods of time.
Travel may be required using Ministry Unit program vehicle.
normal hours of work - 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Monday to Friday and includes a hour unpaid meal break where applicable.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS:
Education, Qualifications and Certifications:Completed Secondary School, plus specialized courses of up to six (6) months
Cook's papers (1-year course) would be an asset
Current Safe Food Handler's Certification
Occupational First Aid Level 1 Certification or willingness to obtain
WHMIS Training
Other training as required by The Salvation Army
Valid Ontario Class "G" Driver's License, a current copy of a driver's abstract for review and verification that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required.
Experience and Knowledge:Minimum of two (2) years of prior related experience, with at least one (1) year of institutional cooking experience preferred.
Experience supervising volunteers/students.
Good knowledge of nutrition and safe food handling
Knowledge about food preparation and is familiar with kitchen equipment.
Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered.

Ability to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check screening.
Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
Compensation:
The target hiring range for this position is $18.99 to $23.73 with a maximum of $28.48.
Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
