Reporting to the Manager, Conflict Resolution and Investigations (CRI), the incumbent is the primary actor in resolving and investigating Student Code of Conduct complaints with the support and guidance of the CRI Manager. The incumbent works directly with complainants, respondents, and witnesses to assess a situation and determine the appropriate next steps to resolving a complaint. This involves coordinating and collaborating with various departments across the college. Specific duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Explaining the CRI Office\'s mandate/role to college community members
  • Conducting intakes and triaging complaints to determine whether an issue fits within the CRI Office\'s mandate or should be referred elsewhere and making the appropriate referral
  • Conducting neutral and fair fact-finding process to gather information about a complaint
  • Communicating complaint process and next steps to the parties of to complaint; corresponding with parties to a complaint throughout process
  • Conducting appropriate research and making inquiries to identify scope of issue and potential resolution or making recommendations on potential next steps
  • Identifying applicable legislation, regulations, policies or procedures, code of conduct, etc. related to the case file and making recommendations
  • Scheduling meetings and/or interviews and handling logistics for meetings
  • Preparing files and documentation for investigation; ensuring all background research has been conducted and file is well documented and organized
  • Conducting investigative meetings/interviews with all parties applicable to a complaint and to a resolution; determining steps towards a resolution and conducting meetings to achieve the resolution
  • Making recommendations regarding appropriate sanctions under the Student Code of Conduct and drafting sanctions for review by manager
  • Conducting closing meetings with students to provide the outcome of the process regarding their complaint and/or the outcome of the complaint against them
  • Drafting reports regarding student complaints about employees for review by the CRI Manager; flagging serious, sensitive, or systemic complaints to the manager\'s attention
  • Assisting manager where required with larger, more complex investigations
  • Using case management database to ensure complaint files and case activities are properly documented, well organized, accurate and complete
  • Assisting in the development and delivery of educational/awareness campaigns to various audiences
  • Keeping abreast of changing legislation and developments in the field of conflict resolution
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Successfully completed a three-year postsecondary diploma/degree in social sciences, human resources, police foundations, criminology or another related field specializing in conflict resolution
  • Minimum of five years\' experience in providing intake, complaint handling, and conflict resolution services preferably in an educational or public sector environment
  • Some investigative and complaint resolution experience necessary
  • Previous experience working with a diverse employee base and an understanding of its potential impact on workplace issues
  • Experience using a complaints management database an asset
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills including the ability to effectively communicate with individuals who may be distressed or emotionally distraught or who may have a communication barrier
  • Strong computer skills - experience using Microsoft Office software packages (Word, Excel, various social media platforms, etc.); internet sourcing/research skills
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Demonstrated conflict resolution skills and training
