The Wellness Worker is responsible for planning and implementing initiatives
associated with preventing and reducing substance misuse at Wet'suwet'en First
Nation, utilizing a Trauma-Informed Approach. The Worker provides direct support to
individuals and families struggling with challenges such as mental health issues,
substance use, and family violence through counselling, education, and referral
services.
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Prevention:
Regularly distribute written material on substance abuse prevention.
Hold educational workshops on a quarterly basis, ensuring each workshop
will target a specific age group.
Promote and host cultural activities aimed at increasing cultural knowledge
and pride.
Promote and host recreational and social activities that promote substance
use and a substance-free lifestyle.
Intervention:
Provide an initial assessment of the client's needs.
Set up a treatment plan with and for the client.
Co-host group counselling sessions in consultation with the Mental Health
Clinician
Coordinate and host self-help groups in the community as requested.
Follow-up for after care:
Ensure an after-care plan is in place before the client's release date.
Provide individualized support for those maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
Promote group support for abstinence
Promote and facilitate activities for healthy living
Collaboration:
Collaborate with community leadership, other service providers and the
general community on abuse prevention and intervention.
Attend Wet'suwet'en First Nation community member meetings, Community
Enhancement Committee meetings and other Health and Wellness meetings
as requested.
Consult with local Hereditary Chiefs/Elders and Knowledge Holders for
information and ceremonies. Incorporate traditional and cultural healing
approaches into services and co-facilitate cultural activities such as landbased
teachings.
Administration:
Maintain client-related records and statistics
Maintain a community events calendar and individual counselling schedules
up to date.
Provides monthly written and weekly reports as requested.
Performs other duties as deemed necessary.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities/ Preferred Skills
Knowledge of Indigenous history, culture, traditions and socio-economic
conditions (specifically Wet'suwet'en)
Working knowledge of the substance misuse field.
Knowledge of the various interventions for substance misuse prevention and
intervention
Interpersonal - maintains confidentiality, open to other's ideas and
willingness to try new things.
Planning /organizing skills - prioritizes and plans work activities, uses time
management and develops action plans to meet deadlines.
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Human Services Diploma
Minimum of two years of experience in the social services field
Demonstrates the highest degree of confidentiality
Experience with Word, Outlook, Excel, and working with video conferencing
platforms Zoom and Teams communication tools
Ability to be flexible to meet changing priorities
Responsive to evening and weekend crisis-oriented matters
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Valid Driver's License and own transportation
WAGE RANGE: $20-30 per hour, pending experience
