Summary
Ponoka County is seeking a dedicated and community-minded individual to join our team as a Community Peace Officer (CPO) Level 1. In this key role, you will support the safety and well-being of our residents and visitors through proactive patrols, education, and enforcement of municipal bylaws and applicable Provincial Statutes.
Reporting to the Enforcement Coordinator, you will be a visible and approachable presence in Ponoka County, Town of Rimbey and Summer Village of Parkland Beach, committed to building strong relationships with the community.
As a CPO you will investigate complaints, conduct regular patrols and support a wide variety of enforcement and public education initiatives - all while keeping safety and public service as top priorities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide public education and outreach regarding municipal bylaws and regulations
  • Respond to inquiries involving municipal bylaws and provide information and interpretations to officials, business representatives, rate payers, and the general public.
  • Proactively patrol in Town of Rimbey, County and Summer Village of Parkland Beach
  • Receive and investigate complaints involving Municipal Bylaws. Issue violation tickets; collect, compile and maintain evidence when required for Court action and the preparation of court documents; liaise with the internal and external parties for coordinated response to joint investigations; represent the municipality in court of law.
  • Enforce municipal bylaws and selected provincial statutes as directed by the Enforcement Coordinator &/or Chief Administrative Officer (CAO)
  • Engage in community events and support public safety initiatives
  • Liaison with SPCA, animal rescue organizations, local veterinary clinics and other external agencies in regards to canine control and other areas of concern
  • Ensure compliance with all OH&S legislation and municipal policies and procedures
  • Attend emergency scenes and assist other emergency services as required within the scope of authority. Assist in emergency/disaster response as per the Emergency
  • Prepare reports and correspondence regarding the status of investigations and/or complaints as required and maintain complete and accurate records within the applicable software and systems.

Qualifications:
  • Required:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.)
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's license and acceptable Driver's Abstract
  • Ability to obtain Community Peace Officer Level 1 appointment under Alberta Justice guidelines
  • Valid Physical Fitness Test as accepted by Alberta Solicitor General for the Community Peace Officer Level 1 Appointment
  • Able to obtain CPIC Certified Criminal Record Check
  • Assets:
  • Post-secondary education in law enforcement, criminal justice, or related field
  • Conflict resolution or mediation training
  • Previous experience as a Police Officer, Community Peace Officer, Bylaw Officer, or in a security/public safety role
  • Knowledge of Alberta legislation and municipal enforcement practices
  • Related experience in traffic enforcement, municipal bylaw enforcement and commercial vehicles in a rural setting.

  • Strong interpersonal and conflict resolution skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Proficient in MS Office and enforcement database software
  • Ability to interpret legislation and bylaws with accuracy and fairness
  • Willing to work outdoors year-round, including evenings, weekends, and holidays
  • Ability to handle potential conflict situations, deal with stressful situations and react with good judgement, diplomacy and tact.
