Position Overview:

This position is responsible for enforcing the provision of bylaws passed by City Council, and the provision of appointed statutes under the Peace Officer Program as directed by the Solicitor General of Alberta. The incumbent assists and works cooperatively with the RCMP, Fire Services, Fish & Wildlife, Parks, and other allied policing agencies, municipal area partners, internal municipal departments and the community. He/she investigates bylaw and other provincial statutes complaints, as authorized by their appointments, and disputes, and ensures appropriate resolutions either by fine, order or education. This position reports to the Peace Officer Sergeant.

Responsibilities:

Enforcement:

  • Provide enforcement of Municipal Bylaws, Provincial Status, Acts and Regulations.
  • Participate in local educational programs as they relate to public safety.
  • Adhere to the requirement and directive as outlined under the appointment of Solicitor General of Alberta and municipality\'s authorization to employ Peace Officers.
  • Work collaboratively with RCMP, Fire, Fish & Wildlife, Parks, and other allied policing agencies.
  • Assist City Council and Senior Management in developing and implementing standards relating to the administration and operations for the provision of law enforcement.
  • Review and make recommendation for new or existing Municipal Bylaws.
  • Ensure all law enforcement activities are conducted in a manner that demonstrates professionalism, respect and regard for public health and safety.
  • Provide support to City departments and City initiatives as they relate to law enforcement.
  • Assist in emergency/disaster responses under the direction of the Emergency Operations Centre EOC when a City Disaster Response Plan is activated.
  • Assists RCMP, Fire, Rescue and EMS services in day to day emergency responses.
  • Attend and participate in court proceedings as required including the prosecution of charges and violations issued as per the Provincial Offenses and Procedures Act.
  • Attend any professional development courses, workshops, seminars, etc. as approved by their immediate supervisor.
  • Provide monthly summary reports on activities to management.
  • Tag vehicles to be removed from snow routes.
  • Assists, as required, in the preparation of the annual budget as well as other related administrative functions.
  • Ensure that all equipment in patrol vehicles are maintained properly.
  • Maintain a safe working environment and report all safety concerns to the immediate supervisor.
Stakeholder Relations:
  • Attend public events to maintain and preserve the public peace.
  • Educate and inform the public of the role and responsibilities of Peace Officers.
  • Deliver proactive prevention and education programs to schools and community groups.
  • Liaise with and assist the RCMP and other external agencies in the areas of found property, public education and public safety.
Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma and Diploma in Law Enforcement or Accredited Police Training or equivalent.
  • Completion of Community Peace Officer Level 1 Training Program.
  • Two (2) to three (3) years\' experience in enforcement, security or military related experience.
The desired designations, licences and certificates, or equivalences include:
  • PPCT certification.
  • Emergency Vehicle Operations Course
  • RCMP Reliability security clearance.
  • First Aid /CPR.
  • Peace Officer Level 1 appointment or successful completion of Community Peace Officer Induction Program or equivalent.
  • Pass an enhanced reliability and criminal records check and a child welfare background check.
  • Must have successfully completed a PARE within the last six months.
  • Possess and maintain a valid Alberta class 5 driver\'s license and provide a driver\'s abstract
