Job Description

The Town of Coaldale has an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated Community Peace Officer (CPO1) to be part of the Coaldale Protective Services Team. The position reports to the Manager of Enforcement Services and will be responsible for duties such as:

Responding to and investigating calls for service within the Town of Coaldale, applying specific Federal & Provincial Statues and Town Bylaws. The ability to complete detailed written reports, legal documents, violation tickets, and warnings as circumstances dictate. Testify in court in a confident and professional manner. Proactively conduct foot/bike/vehicle patrols of schools, roads, paths, and infrastructure within the Town of Coaldale, with a focus on School and Pedestrian safety, Traffic Enforcement, and Community involvement. Collaborate with local schools, RCMP, and businesses to promote community safety. Partner with RCMP to maintain an excellent working relationship by completing joint traffic safety operations, intelligence/information sharing, community events, and calls for service within scope of CPO duties. A successful candidate will possess a combination of education and experience that will provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform at a high level.

Compensation



2025 wage range: $37.99/hour to $41.51/hour $3/hour shift premium for evenings and weekends 100% employer-paid health and dental benefit premiums (excluding LTD) after successful completion of a 6-month probationary period $1,000 annual health spending account Opportunity for a 5.75% increase effective January 1, 2026 Opportunity for a 5.75% increase effective January 1, 2027

Additional Job Duties and Accountabilities



Enforce Town Bylaws through administrative and inspection work, including duties related to dog control, domestic animals, and community standards. Prepare charges and serve summonses. Compile accurate work records, time sheets, and statistics. Assist Fire Services and town employees at the request of the Fire Chief. Maintain effective working relationships with other enforcement and regulatory agencies. Stay current on relevant laws and procedures, recommending changes to management as needed. Promote relevant school programs and provide mentorship to students. Participate in school meetings, activities, intelligence gathering, and threat assessments.

Requirements



Minimum age of 18 years with a High School Diploma or equivalent. Graduate of a post-secondary institution and/or proven experience in Law Enforcement, Bylaw Enforcement, or as a Community Peace Officer Level I in Alberta. Acute vision, no color blindness, and ability to pass an approved physical ability test (PARE, POPAT, COPAT, or APREP). Knowledge of court procedures for processing charges and serving summonses. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Proficiency with Microsoft Office. Ability to learn and interpret various Town Bylaws and Federal/Provincial Statutes. Ability to maintain effective working relationships with internal and external agencies. Availability to work weekend and evening shifts as directed. Experience with Radar & Laser operations, ROADS, JOIN (or similar law enforcement systems), and dangerous goods enforcement designation considered an asset. Self-motivated, willing to learn, and committed to community service. Proven team player who is competent and of good character. Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's license (non-GDL). Maintain current First Aid, AED, and CPR certifications. Candidates progressing to final stages must provide proof of education and designation. Must obtain and maintain a favorable criminal record check with RCMP Verified Reliable status and a Vulnerable Sector Check. Candidates should describe and provide examples of their experience with community-based initiatives and Peace Officer-community relations.

Working Conditions



Flexible schedule with some evening and weekend shifts. Manual dexterity required to use desktop computer and peripherals. Moving up to 100 lbs may be required. Ability to attend educational presentations.
