Primary Responsibilities:

Reporting to the Bieler School of Environment Administrative Officer, the incumbent will develop and implement the School\xe2\x80\x99s communications strategy to build awareness by creating a communication plan to establish direction and vision over both the short and long term to build recognition of the Bieler School research, faculty, staff, students, alumni and donors and by developing, guiding and implementing communication strategies, plans, and systems to ensure that information, news, activities, and projects are communicated clearly, accurately and effectively to internal and external stakeholders. Assist the Bieler School in meeting communication objectives regarding its educational programs, research activities, public seminars, and professional development workshops and donor reports.

The incumbent will develop, edit, format, and regularly assess the content of the School\xe2\x80\x99s website, digital/social media, communication channels, email distributions and digital newsletters. Format and optimize web content for maximum usefulness and navigability and continually identify ways to improve it with demonstrated ability to plan and design websites and marketing campaigns. Proficiency in Drupal, Sway, Google Analytics, Mailchimp, Adobe CC, and other current platforms. Excellent visual design skills with sensitivity to user-system interaction and is up to date with latest trends, policies and best practices and new tools in the rapidly changing field of web communications, design, multimedia, and social media.

The position is responsible for the preparation and delivery of public relations materials and functioning of School activities, such as communications for major events, campaigns, announcements, newsletters, press releases, and student activities and to ensure information is communicated clearly, accurately, and effectively in support of faculty, staff, student, and alumni relations. Will also support the creation and management of research symposiums, conferences, and workshops.

It is expected that the Communications Officer will develop and maintain relationships with McGill Communications and External Relations and the communication teams at Arts, Science and AES as required to accomplish the School\xe2\x80\x99s communications objectives.

Other Qualifying Skills and/or Abilities

  • Science communication experience and/or education is a major asset.

  • Excellent writing and oral communication skills in both English and French is required.

  • Experience in developing and implementing communication plans in a higher education or non-profit environment.

  • Proven experience using social media and technology to improve communication with targeted audiences and versed in web, print, graphic, photographic, social media projects and ability to work and excel in a digital environment.

  • Ability to function under pressure and manage tight and changing deadlines.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, social engagement and demonstrated ability to build constructive and effective relationships both within the unit, the university, and external partners.

  • Strong skills and experience managing large events.

  • Discretion, integrity, tact and professionalism.

  • Ability to anticipate possible difficulties, take initiative, troubleshoot and implement solutions.


This is a one-year contract position with the possibility of extension based on performance. This position is located at McGill University downtown campus, Montreal, Quebec.

McGill University is an English-language university where most teaching and research activities are conducted in the English Language, thereby requiring English communication both verbally and in writing.
