Communications and Graphic Design Coordinator, University RelationsPrimary Purpose: The Communications and Graphic Design Coordinator is responsible for planning and creating relevant, meaningful, timely and effective communications and graphic design strategies in support of the Teaching, Learning and Student Experience (TLSE) portfolio, which are aligned with the strategic directions of the TLSE and the university.Nature of Work: Reporting to the Director, Service Team, the Communications and Graphic Design Coordinator provides expert communications and marketing guidance and advice and creates communications, marketing and design pieces. This work is highly visible reaching a local, national and international audience that influences the reputation of the university and the student experience. This is a high-volume position requiring sound judgement and the ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment with competing demands. Dealing with multiple deadlines, continuous change, and shifting priorities is the norm.Flexible hours may be required on an occasional basis outside of standard working hours (8:30 am-4:30 pm).University Relations is responsible for institutional advancement programs (alumni and external relations, development, strategic communications), and as such is dedicated to supporting the related needs of all colleges, units and the university as a whole. Accountabilities:
  • Plan, develop and implement innovative, collaborative and coordinated communications and design strategies in support of all units within the TLSE portfolio and aligned with institution goals;
  • Provide expert advice and guidance to TLSE leaders and staff with respect to communications and design supporting the mandate and vision for the TLSE;
  • Ensure designed material developed by or supported by the Service Teams follows visual expression guidelines.
  • Assigns and prioritizes graphic design work among the other graphic designers on the team.
  • Assist in the creation of a strategic direction for communication and design materials primarily focusing on current graduate and undergraduate students at the University of Saskatchewan;
  • Create and design all aspects of print production including concept development, graphic design, photography, layout, prepress, proofing services and final delivery;
  • Work in a highly flexible and collaborative team environment responsive to changing needs, multiple demands and tight timelines;
  • Consult with a variety of campus stakeholders within and beyond the TLSE portfolio including representatives from direct and non-direct entry colleges and University Relations;
  • Develop and write effective, reliable, audience appropriate content for communications materials (including websites, print and other media);
  • Provide expert design advise and support to all units across the TLSE, and fellow designers within the Service Team, including managing requests for quotes, coordinating mail outs with Canada Post and overseas printing, investigating the latest trends in publications techniques and strategies, and managing image banks;
  • Cultivate professional relationships that support effective partnerships and shared goals with other units within and outside of University Relations and the TLSE;
  • Ensure that internal standards, procedures, policies and best practices are utilized in all communications and publications materials in support of the visual identify of the University;
  • Support event planning teams to ensure the successful delivery of student events; and
  • Support the identification of timely, value-added technologies and ideas to improve communications and publications opportunities for the team.
Education: A university degree in communications, publishing, graphic design or related field. A combination of education and directly relevant experience will be considered.Experience: Minimum three to five years of communications and/or publications work experience, preferably in a post-secondary environment, with a demonstrated progression in level of responsibility.Skills:
  • Exceptional ability to write messages for a variety of student audiences along with excellent oral and interpersonal skills;
  • knowledge and understanding of issues, including cultural, socioeconomic, and other factors affecting Indigenous Peoples and an awareness that Indigenous engagement is a strategic priority at the university;
  • building relationships within a diverse post-secondary setting to foster a community of accessibility, equity, and inclusion;
  • experience working with diverse communities and stakeholders in an organizational setting;
  • demonstrated proficiency dealing with all aspects of publications development from concept development to pre-press and beyond, proven creative design and layout skills, a proven ability to work collaboratively with multiple stakeholders and as part of a team;
  • strong organizational skills and attention to detail;
  • strong problem-solving and creative thinking skills, demonstrated customer service orientation, demonstrated responsiveness in addressing user needs and delivering service in a timely manner, ability to work independently and exercise effective self-management;
  • strong organizational and time-management skills.
