United Nurses of Alberta, the union for more than 30,000 Registered Nurses, Registered Psychiatric Nurses, and allied health care workers in Alberta, is seeking a Communications Advisor to work on digital campaigns as part of our small communications team to create and implement issue-based communications strategies that can engage members and move the dial on public opinion on a range of issues. Reporting to the Director of Labour Relations, the Communications Advisor will be part of a team responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining internal and external communications programs. Working with other members of UNA\'s communications team, the successful candidate will create digital media and content for use in campaigns, and support online campaigns and email outreach to engage new and established audiences, including assisting in union organizing campaigns. The successful candidate will also work with team members to co-ordinate use of other advertising media in campaigns, including radio, outdoor, and online markets. The successful candidate will also provide technical support on design, photography, web and video editing, animation, and streamed social media events in co-ordination with UNA\'s communications and systems support teams; draft copy for emails, social media posts, and other writing needs as required; assist with events and meetings as required; and complete other duties as required. Required skills, ability and training:
  • Demonstrated writing and research skills
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills
  • Experience and knowledge of print and audio-visual production
  • Familiarity with labour organizing and issues
  • University training in journalism, communications public relations or nursing
  • Competency in developing media strategies, maintaining media contacts, preparing news releases, and co-ordinating and assisting with news conferences and events
  • Familiarity with major relevant legislation and UNA collective agreements
  • Newswriting skills and an understanding of the needs of news media
  • Commitment to the goals and principles of United Nurses of Alberta and the trade union movement
  • Familiarity with issues within the health care sector and the Canadian trade union movement
  • The successful candidate must possess a valid driver\'s permit and be prepared to work irregular hours on occasion and to travel throughout Alberta
Requirements Desirable additional experience:
  • Familiarity with New/Mode, Action Network, and related applications to support online advocacy campaigns and digital organizing
  • Knowledge of the legal framework applicable to elections, communications, and care, and labour relations in Alberta
  • Knowledge of Search Engine Optimization and internet ranking techniques
  • Contacts in commercial advertising media organizations to purchase advertising on behalf of UNA
  • Knowledge of advertising analytics, tracking, and reporting
  • Knowledge of online marketing and digital organizing software
  • Experience with purchasing and scheduling radio, outdoor and digital advertising
  • Knowledge of intellectual property practices in the advertising industry
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
