Hiring Unit:
The Office of International Student Services
International Student Services (ISS) supports the growth, progress, and success of all international students (including visiting and exchange students) at McGill and aims to ease their transition to a new university, a new home and a new country. They provide a range of services and resources for international students including orientation webinars, immigration advising, health insurance guidance, and social and cultural programming and events.
Position Summary:
Under supervision and guidance of the Manager of Student Development & Communications, the incumbent is responsible for the day-to-day management of the International Buddy Program and the First Friend Program, including responding to inquiries from participants, recruiting volunteers, and improving the matching software. The incumbent will also draft ISS communications materials; update the ISS website as requested; communicate with current & incoming students according to the Communications Plan; and assist with event planning & logistics and front-line duties as needed.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
Oversees the ISS Meet & Greet Lounge:

  • Sets up and replenishes snacks, drinks, ISS swag, pamphlets, maps and posters.
  • Acts as host within the lounge: engaging new students in conversation, answering questions, providing referrals and directions.
  • Tracks and reports on the number of students visiting the lounge and captures their feedback.

Provides logistical support – and acts as a student host - for the International Student Welcome Reception (Sept. 22 afternoon/evening)
  • Helps with event set-up, registration, and crowd management
  • Acts as host and event activity leader
  • Acts as a resource and referral point to new international students

Other Qualifying Skills and Abilities:
  • Experience working with international students as well as student volunteers.
  • Heightened awareness of international students’ needs and issues, and solid understanding of intercultural communications.
  • Experience living/studying abroad for an extended period of time.
  • In-depth knowledge of McGill services and resources.
  • Ability to exercise tact and diplomacy, and respect the privacy and confidentiality of student communications and interactions.
  • Ability to manage print and web communications, including social media platforms – Instagram & Facebook
  • Must possess exceptional organizational skills and show attention to detail
  • Must be comfortable multi-tasking and managing multiple deadlines.
  • Proven ability to work autonomously and as a member of a team.
  • Ability to take initiative and problem-solve.
  • Excellent spoken and written English.
  • Spoken French and other spoken languages considered an asset.
  • Experience with web design skills an asset (e.g. WMS, Drupal, HTML).

Minimum Education and Experience: High School Diploma 2 Years Related Experience







Hourly Salary: (AMUSE C) $15.82







Estimated Number of Work Hours per Week: 6 (Part time)
