Duties

  • Are you passionate about history and historical artifacts? Are you excited to play an integral role in preserving history at Klondike National Historic Sites? If so, this might be the job for you!

As the collections specialist, you will work with a multi-disciplinary team of colleagues, consultants, and stakeholders to progress dynamic projects seeking sustainability for an iconic grouping of national historic sites.

You will support the continuation of the real property strategy and collections rationalization projects for Klondike National Historic Sites. Through technical advice and guidance to increase public access and use of the collection, you will contribute to enhanced visitor experience including special events, programs, and permitting.

You will provide technical assistance in the management of archaeological and/or historical collections, provide functional input for collections information systems maintenance and development, and conduct assigned research and reporting. As the custodian of a large collection, you will support inventory, cleaning, and maintenance of objects and artefacts in storage and on display, movement and tracking of objects and artefacts in alignment with capital betterments, exhibits, and projects.

Intent of the process

We are looking to hire a candidate in a term position for 6 months with the opportunity for extension \xe2\x80\x93 expected start date of May 1, 2023.

For this process, we expect to conduct the interview and other assessments in between March 16th and March 31st.

This process may be used to create a list of qualified candidates to staff similar positions with various tenures, security levels or linguistic requirements in same or other parts of the country.

In order to be considered, your application must clearly explain how you meet the following (essential qualifications)

EDUCATION:
Graduation with a degree from a recognized university in a field relevant to the duties of the position, such as archaeology, ethnology, history, history of art, museum studies or heritage conservation
or
an acceptable combination of education, training and experience Degree equivalency
EXPERIENCE:
  • Recent museum related experience* in the management of historic and/or archaeological collections
  • Experience in the maintenance of collections management information systems (electronic or manual) and updating information associated with collections
  • Experience in responding to collections enquiries from internal and external clients
  • Experience in using various computer software such as email, spreadsheets and word processing

  • We are looking for a depth and breadth of experience normally acquired in the course of minimum one (1) year.

KNOWLEDGE:
  • Knowledge of standard museum procedures, practices and techniques for the acquisition, registration, cataloguing, care and handling, preventative conservation, storage, inventory, reconciliation and the disposition of historical and/or archaeological objects and reproductions
  • Knowledge of Parks Canada and its mandate

ABILITIES:
  • Ability to handle, store and pack historical and archaeological objects appropriate to their condition, size and weight and in a safe and efficient manner according to museum standard and practice
  • Ability to research, analyze, evaluate and find solutions in the management of collections
  • Ability to lift and move boxes and artefacts of varying sizes and weight in a safe and efficient manner

OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
This position may require the incumbent to:
  • Work irregular hours, overtime, weekends and/or statutory holidays and provincial/territorial holidays, when required
  • Wear a Parks Canada uniform and prescribed protective equipment

  • Possession of a valid class 5 Driver\xe2\x80\x99s Licence
  • Must undergo and pass pre-placement and periodic medical checks (when position is located in an area classed as isolated and remote, a pre-employment medical examination of an individual and his/her dependants may be required)
