Civil Engineering Co Op Student

Fort St. John, BC, Canada

Job Description

We are looking for candidates with their own unique talents. If you don\'t meet 100% of the preferred skills outlined in this job posting, tell us why you\'d be a great fit for Urban Systems in your cover letter! About the Opportunity Our growing Fort St. John office is currently looking for a capable and enthusiastic civil or environmental engineering student to join our team for a 4-, 8- or 12-month co-op work term starting in May 2023. We recognize that moving to a different city for a co-op placement can be expensive and finding accommodations is stressful. If relocation is required, we are able to assist in this transition. As a Co-op, you will work alongside skilled Engineers and Civil Technologists to assist with the engineering design and construction of municipal projects across the Peace Region. You will be involved with a variety of water, stormwater, sanitary sewer, and road infrastructure projects where you can develop your engineering skills in a practical, real-world setting. Our typical clients in this market include Local Governments and First Nations. We understand the need for you to have meaningful work terms during your co-op education, so we strive to create challenging, multifaceted and rewarding opportunities. Our goal is for you to come away with an enhanced skill set that will serve you well in your future career as a professional engineer. Coupled with the unmatched learning and project experience opportunities, some of your key responsibilities will be:

  • Spreadsheet development and utilities analysis.
  • Cost estimating.
  • Construction inspection.
  • Technical writing and communications.
  • Hydraulic modeling (water, sewer, and stormwater).
  • Public engagement.
  • Project support and administration.
This is not an exhaustive list, and in keeping with our philosophy of "hands-on" learning and growth, you will be given as much freedom and responsibility as you demonstrate you can handle.
About You Our preferred candidate is currently enrolled in a civil or civil environmental engineering co-op degree program, is available for a 4-, 8- or 12-month work term, and has some previously related experience. Preference will be given to candidates who possess the following skills, strengths, and interests:
  • Exposure to municipal servicing design principles.
  • Excitement gaining experience with some of the following: water, stormwater and sewer infrastructure design, hydraulic modeling, and road design.
  • Work independently and collaborate effectively with others.
  • Proactive communicator who takes initiative.
  • Attraction to the consulting industry and the ability to work with a variety of clients, contractors, and other consultants.
  • Experience or an interest in gaining experience in construction inspections.
  • Production of high-quality work under all circumstances.
  • Desire to work in a fast-paced environment with a team of professionals who are deeply committed to exceeding client expectations.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple project requirements and tasks simultaneously
  • Valid class 5 driver\'s license
