The Thompson-Nicola Regional District is located in south-central British Columbia, with dozens rural and urban communities spread across 44,300 square kilometres. The TNRD provides more than 120 local government services to approximately 144,000 people in 10 Electoral Areas, 11 member municipalities, and 25 First Nations.


The TNRD is headquartered in the City of Kamloops, the largest community within the regional district. The Thompson-Nicola region has a vast range of climates that experience true four-season weather, with plenty of year-round sunshine, little rain, and warm summers. Residents generally have short commutes, easy access to recreation and the outdoors, and a high quality of life. The TNRD acknowledges that we are located within the unceded, ancestral lands of the Nlaka'pumux, Secwepemc, St'at'imc, and Syilx Nations.




Our Library System and Mobile Library




The Thompson-Nicola Regional Library (TNRL), the biggest Regional District department provides services through 13 locations and a Mobile Library. Located in the Central Interior of British Columbia, the TNRL is committed to providing excellent service to patrons for lifetime personal growth, learning and enjoyment. The Library team provides programming, materials and resources to people of all ages and abilities.


The Mobile Library (ML) is a 2018 retrofitted 36' International five ton truck, with a mounted custom built box with three slides and a generator housing a full-service library providing a range of materials including books, magazines, DVDs and more! The ML offers regular service to 31 rural and urban locations across the regional district. Patrons also visit the ML to use its public Wi-Fi and receive technology support. This award-winning vehicle also serves as the Library's biggest billboard!


The TNRL is seeking a Circulation & Reference Assistant who creates a welcoming environment and a superb library experience for all. The position works in an organization that values flexibility, customer service and making a difference in our communities as we strive to build partnerships within and outside the library system. The Circulation & Reference Assistant helps patrons of all ages find answers to their reference questions, including questions about electronic devices. The Assistant registers new patrons, checks materials in/out, performs cash transactions as needed as well as plans and delivers programs. There is a physical component to this position.


The Assistant will be part of a unique library service that takes the library to the community. No two days are the same!


Job Requirements

The Ideal Candidate will have:




Customer service experience and a passion for helping others; A belief in the importance of literacy; Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; Excellent organizational skills; Ability to contribute positively and work effectively within a team environment; Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision; Experience working with children; Demonstrated ability using Microsoft Office programs, social media, and mobile devices; Spirit of adventure; Valid Driver's Licence; Ability to lift 20-25 lbs, stand for extended periods, and bend/reach library shelves.

An aptitude for technology. This includes:


Minimum keyboarding speed of 35wpm. Ability to troubleshoot peripheral equipment such as printers, USB drives and wireless internet connections. Ability to work with and learn a variety of software applications independently. Ability to assists patrons with e-readers, tablets, smartphones, social media, email and eBooks/audiobooks.

Additional Assets:




Completion of a Diploma or other 2 year college/university program. Completion of a children's literature course from a recognized college or university or completed the CLTP Children and Young Adult courses (or equivalent). Experience working with children (other than own) in a professional capacity. For example, teacher, day care worker or sports coach. Experience designing and delivering children's programs. Parent/Child Mother Goose training and Food Safe certificates.





The position is subject to the provisions of the Collective Agreement with the BC Government and Service Employees' Union, local 705. The Circulation and Reference Assistant is a Grid 9 (pays $27.60 - $30.52 per hours). Part-time staff also receive a percentage in lieu of benefits as well as $1.50 Sunday premium for hours worked.




Applicants should ensure full availability for the schedule:

Sunday 8:00 am to 4:30 pm

There is no scheduled work on Easter Sunday.
