We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Chemical Process Engineer with a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation to join our team. The ideal candidate will have deep, demonstrable experience with high-pressure industrial piping systems (>1000 psi) and/or pressure filtration units (filter presses). This vital role is essential for optimizing our manufacturing processes, ensuring the highest standards of safety and efficiency, and driving the successful commissioning and scale-up of our planned demonstration plant.
Key Responsibilities
This role integrates technical engineering authority (P.Eng.), and operational scale-up expertise:
Process Design & Engineering Authority (P.Eng. Role)
P&ID Redlines & Control Logic:
Execute a comprehensive review of all facility P&IDs. Mark up redlines for operability, safety (HAZOP analysis), and control logic integration. Collaborate directly with mechanical and automation teams to freeze designs for construction.
System Ownership:
Serve as the technical owner for high-pressure piping systems (>1000 psi) and filtration units, ensuring strict compliance with ASME B31.3 and all local pressure vessel regulations (Nova Scotia Department of Labour).
Commissioning, Scale-Up & Operations
Pilot-to-Plant Translation:
Analyze data from pilot/benchtop studies to identify and mitigate scale-up risks (e.g., heat transfer limitations, mixing efficiency, etc.). Adjust the commercial designs accordingly before construction begins.
Commissioning Leadership:
Author and execute a detailed Hot Commissioning Plan. Be physically present on the floor to aid the first introduction of feedstock and troubleshoot real-time yield losses during the ramp-up phase.
Operational Handover:
Take responsibility for proving the plant's capacity. The project is not complete until the plant has successfully demonstrated stable, safe operation at nameplate capacity for 1000 continuous hours.
Additional Responsibilities (General)
Develop and optimize chemical processes for manufacturing.
Ensure full compliance with safety and environmental regulations.
Conduct research and testing to innovate new solutions and support continuous improvement initiatives.
Essential Qualifications
Designation:
Registered (or immediately eligible for registration) as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng) in Nova Scotia.
Education:
Minimum Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Chemical Engineering or Process Engineering.
Experience:
4+ years of progressive experience in industrial processing, chemical refining, or hydrometallurgy.
Required Skills
Deep technical familiarity with solid-liquid separation (e.g., filter presses), high-pressure piping, and hydraulic calculations including pump sizing.
Excellent problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and proven ability to work collaboratively in a cross-functional team environment. Strong written and verbal communication skills.
