The School of Trades & Apprenticeship is currently seeking a qualified individual to provide academic and administrative leadership, supervision, and direction to faculty, support staff, and students in Motive Power programs within the School as a Chair. The Chair is accountable for the planning, development, delivery, and ongoing review of full and part-time programs, ensuring programs are relevant to the needs of students and the community at large according to Conestoga’s strategic plan. Successful candidates will be required to conduct work within Ontario and must be available to work on campus as required. It is anticipated that this position will meet the needs of the department through a hybrid work arrangement with 4 days on-site, and 1 day remote. Responsibilities:
  • Provide academic and administrative leadership to faculty, staff, and students in full and part-time apprenticeship programs, certificate trades programs, diploma technician programs, C.E. programs, courses, and training and development activity at the Guelph campus.
  • Ensure the programs operate in accordance with college policies and procedures
  • Plan, develop, and schedule complex activities and operations
  • Effectively allocate human, fiscal, and physical resources
  • Coordinate day to day operations for academic programs and activities, including applied research, marketing, resource acquisition, ongoing review, and partnership activities
  • Facilitate the development and implementation of new academic programs and the ongoing review of existing programs to ensure continuous quality improvement, and reflect changing technology, economic and market influences, and employment opportunities
  • Determine areas for growth, both internationally and domestically, daytime, cohort-based, etc. as well as continuing education and actively contribute strategies to increase enrolment
  • Hire full-time and part-time faculty and staff, establish the workload for faculty in accordance with the provision of the collective agreement, complete performance reviews and employ performance management measures where applicable
  • Coordinate faculty and teaching assignments (multiple locations) to ensure employee effectiveness and productivity as per the collective agreement
  • Contribute to the creation and monitoring/assessing of new program offerings
  • Monitor and approve annual curriculum changes in accordance with college processes
  • Represent the School/College through participation and memberships in committees, working groups, public relations, etc.
  • Liaise with Executive Deans, Deans, Chairs, Managers, faculty, and staff from other schools, and departments such as Student Services, the Registrar’s Office, Bookstore, and Facilities Management to ensure a smooth operation of programs
  • Participate in strategic planning and development/updating of the annual academic plan for the Schools of Engineering & Technology and Trades & Apprenticeship


Qualifications:
  • Three-year Diploma or Degree in a relevant field of study, or a Certificate of Qualification (C of Q) and a Certificate of Apprenticeship in a Red-Seal Trade
  • Minimum seven years of relevant experience in post-secondary education or related field including teaching, program coordinating, and/or administrative leadership
  • Previous experience managing diverse teams while demonstrating a high level of interpersonal skills is required
  • Relevant industry experience in trades is considered an asset
  • Knowledge of and experience in Ministry structure and operations for apprenticeship training and delivery, curriculum development, and student recruiting
  • Strong collaboration, problem-solving and team-building skills, working with multiple stakeholders
  • Knowledge of, and experience in curriculum development, student recruiting, adult education, conflict resolution, and managing employees
  • A commitment to student-centred learning and outcomes-based education
  • Financial management experience, including managing budgets
