Reporting to the Senior Manager of Employment Programs, the
Career Practitioner
is responsible for assisting newcomers to Canada with preparing for and obtaining meaningful employment in Newfoundland and Labrador.
Roles and Responsibilities:
Identify clients' needs and skill enhancement requirements, examine eligibility, explore intervention options and develop an Action Plan
Provide assistance to clients in the area of career development and planning as well as essential job search tools
Assess clients' education and past employment experience in the context of helping clients plan for and maintain successful employment in the Canadian labour market
Provide clients with current information and/or licensure pathways and retraining options as well as information regarding appropriate learning resources
Facilitate employment readiness program for clients
Provide clients with information and guidance on career planning, resume preparation, job search, interview skills, and job maintenance; pre-select candidates for interviews
Enhance networking opportunities for newcomers
Generate and facilitate employment opportunities for newcomers who are eligible to work in Canada
Establish relationships with potential employers through assessing needs, developing a targeted plan and acting as a resource for organizations interested in hiring newcomers
Provide current information to clients regarding access to support programs and services
Assume responsibility for daily caseload management and ensuring all information is recorded accurately for entry into the ARMS and NewOrg databases
Prepare detailed progress reports as outlined in the contract agreement
Participate in professional development activities
Qualifications and Experience:
A Bachelor degree in Education, social sciences or related field
Minimum 2-5 years of experience in counselling techniques, career planning, job search techniques and knowledge of the changing labour market
Experience in Microsoft Office Suite and related computer applications
Excellent organizational and presentation skills
Well-developed relationship building, communication and presentation skills
Effective time management skills
Ability to manage multiple priorities
Conditions of Employment:
Legal authorization to work in Canada
Flexible to work outside of core hours (Monday-Friday, 9:00am - 5:00pm)
Valid class 5 NL driver's license and daily access to a reliable vehicle is required
Some travel may be required
Position is subject to a satisfactory Criminal Record Screening and Vulnerable Sector Check from the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary
