Cantina Norte was created to showcase the best Mexican cuisine tailored for the Canadian palate. Founded by a brother-sister partnership of a multi-generational restaurant family, Cantina Norte aims to support its employees, guests and community here at home and afar through partnership programs like Feed the Hungry where we have adopted a school lunch program where we not only provide all lunches to all students throughout the year but also provide nutritional education for their families in rural Mexico.
As the Bar Manager, you serve as the operational leader at the bar steering the current shift through service, while providing exceptional experiences to your guests at the bar. The following details outline your responsibilities and our expectation of you in this role.

  • Role Basics*
Location: Cantina Norte Edgemont Village
Schedule: Full-time, various shifts 5 days per week, including mornings, late evenings and weekends.
Position: Bar Manager
Reports to: General Manager
Salary: Annual salary (based on experience) + medical & dental benefits after 3 months
  • Objectives & Key Responsibilities: *
Your responsibilities are broken up into 3 key categories with each category having its own objectives and metrics of success. In success you will find balance in these areas to simultaneously move the needle forward on metrics in each respective area. The Bar Manager may serve as the closing manager on evenings when they are closing the bar.
Bar Service Management - 60%
  • Lead the bar team through daily service, ensuring drinks are made and guests are served according to policies and procedures.
  • Each day you will ensure that all the relevant details of the day are reported to the leadership team via the manager's log. This is the primary reporting channel for the management team.
  • Juggle serving guests at the bar with making drinks for the service well.
  • Prepare house-made syrups, juices, batches, and infusions.
  • Maintain a clean and well-stocked bar space at all times.
  • Provide upscale, detail-oriented service whilst making connections with guests and creating regulars.
  • Serve as an example to the rest of the front of house team with exemplary product knowledge and customer service skills.
  • Act as manager-on-duty when necessary to assist in any and all restaurant matters;
  • Close the restaurant and complete the financial day end 3-4 times a week;
Bar Inventory Management - 25%
  • Manage the relationship with our beverage vendors including weekly ordering and the coordination of any additional processes needed to facilitate the sending and receiving of beverage inventory such as beer keg rotations.
  • Ensure regular bar inventory is completed according to bar inventory procedures. This includes the ongoing management of beverage programs, products and recipes in the Optimum Control platform.
  • Ensure inbound beverage products received are entered into inventory in a timely manner and their associated invoices sent to the Finance Team.
Front of House Employee Training - 15%
  • As beverage trainer-in-chief, you are responsible for the development of our front-of-house team's beverage product knowledge ensuring they are receiving the training and support they need to succeed in their roles. You may run training sessions, create training materials, or whatever other methods you choose to ensure that the company policies and procedures set my the ownership team are followed and our business objectives are being met.
  • Assist in the hiring and development of bar employees. While this activity is primarily led by the General Manager, the Bar Manager will often assist with various aspects of employee recruitment and development.
  • Knowledge, Skills & Experience: *
  • Be awesome!
  • 2+ year(s) of bartending experience with 3+ years of total restaurant experience.
  • Strong oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills. Your friends describe you as a charmer.
  • Knowledge of BC wine, classic cocktails, coffee, Tequila/Mezcal, craft beer, and Mexican cuisine.
  • The ability to anticipate guests' needs before they are even aware of them themselves. A proven record of exceptional customer service. You have a particular skill in turning difficult situations into success ones.
  • The desire to be a part of a team, with a sense of shared responsibility for your coworkers' success.
  • A "work hard, play hard" mentality.
  • Possess problem solving skills and be able to work with little supervision.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to improvise.
  • High level of comfort and familiarity with today's leading technologies (iPhone/Android).
  • Ability to legally work in Canada (Valid Work Permit etc.);
  • Valid BC Food Safe certification; and
  • Valid Serving It Right certification.
  • Assets (but not essential): *
  • The ability to operate a manual espresso machine (dosing, puck preparation, shot timing);
  • Experience using Optimum Control, TouchBistro POS and QSR software;
  • Wine/spirit/beer knowledge certifications (WSET, Cicerone, etc.);
  • A valid first aid certificate.
