JOB SUMMARY


By-law & Regulatory Enforcement is responsible for the enforcement of a multitude of municipal by-laws and provincial legislation and other enforcement related services on a city-wide basis to address issues of safety, nuisance and consumer protection for the residents. You are responsible for enforcing the city\xe2\x80\x99s council-approved regulatory by-laws and several provincial statutes in order to protect the health and safety of the general public and consumers and to reduce or eliminate nuisances. You respond to complaints from the public and perform proactive inspections of municipally licensed establishments and vehicles.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE


Completion of 2 year community college diploma in a related field Minimum of 3 years of experience in law enforcement and 1 year in a client service environment dealing directly with the public

CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENCES



Valid Ontario unrestricted G class driver\xe2\x80\x99s licence (or provincial equivalent) with no more than 6 demerit points accumulated

KNOWLEDGE


  • Municipal by-laws including Animal, Business Licensing, Taxi Licensing, Noise, Smoking, Portable Signs, Property Maintenance, Fences, Traffic and Parking, Care of Streets, Discharge of Firearms, Fireworks, Open Air Fires, Parks, Topsoil Removal, Encroachments and some provincial statutes including the Tobacco Control Act and Livestock Valuer procedures
  • Dispute resolution techniques
  • All processes related to issuing and administering charges, appeals and court preparation and testimony in accordance with the Provincial Offences Act
  • By-law Services Branch computer applications including Requests for Services, Pet ID and Business Licensing along with corporate systems (e-mail, Word)
  • Knowledge of applicable health and safety legislation, including the rights and duties of workers, and general knowledge of corporate/departmental policies and procedures related to health and safety

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
  • Language Requirement: Various language requirements, locations may require English only, French only OR Bilingual competencies. Some positions require English oral, reading, and writing. Some positions required French oral, reading and writing.
  • Police Record Check: The successful candidate will be required to complete a Vulnerable Sector Check with the Police Services detachment in their jurisdiction to the City of Ottawa\xe2\x80\x99s satisfaction.
  • You will initially be paid 95% of your starting rate of pay, in accordance with the collective agreement.
  • Experience and formal training combined with demonstrated performance and ability may substitute for stipulated academic requirements.
