Job summary
The business development specialist is responsible for leading, developing and implementing business development initiatives that assist our lawyers with the acquisition, retention and expansion of clients. The position provides strategic guidance, oversees major projects and ensures alignment with firm objectives, a wide variety of practice groups, industry teams and offices. This role also supervises the business development coordinator.
Reporting to the Senior Director of Business Development and Solution Delivery, this full-time permanent position will be based in one of our office locations. It will be a hybrid position with a physical presence in the office required to build relationships. Some travel between our offices will be required.
Responsibilities include:
Leading the development and implementation of the firm's business development strategy, working with the business development coordinator
Leading the preparation of complex pitches and proposals using an effective project management approach, including all pre- and post-submission tasks such as pre-submission questions, making recommendations on proposal content, ensuring proposals are proofed by writers, following up on post-submission, preparing responses for interview questions and tracking win/loss results
Leading the debrief calls with prospective clients when not successful in formal proposals
Overseeing the selection and maintenance with the firm's proposal builder tool and vendor relationship
Leading the analysis of firm data (client, prospects and event and marketing lists) to identify leads and growth clients and identify opportunities to help close business
Leading business development-related market, competitor and client research and analysis to identify opportunities for growth and expansion
Performing tasks to support a pursuit team approach to business development, such as researching prospects, coordinating internal meetings and capturing and reporting on lead activity from lawyers
Monitoring tender platforms such as Merx and government tender websites and identifying strategic opportunities with practice area leads
Supporting individual lawyer business development by maintaining templates for self-serve individual business development plans
Acting as a key liaison with the firm's business development consultant as needed
Promoting business wins via the firm's internal newsletter through write-ups or recorded client and business development success stories and equipping marketing strategists with updates by practice areas
Acting as a power user and trainer for the firm's contact management systems
Leading the strategy, coordination and supports of award nominations and submissions (Chambers, Best Lawyers, Benchmark Litigation, Lexpert, Legal500) and relationships with the external providers
Assisting with special projects and initiatives related to the marketing and business development department's annual goals
Knowledge, skills and abilities required:
Strong leadership, project management and strategic planning
Ability to establish strong relationships with lawyers, based on trust and ability to follow through on deadlines and commitments
Excellent written and verbal communication, analytical and coaching abilities
Must be highly organized and able to prioritize, multitask and work in a fast-paced environment
Keen attention to detail
Ability to work well to follow instructions, with a team and independently
Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and experience with CRM software
Ability to handle situations diplomatically and professionally
Experience with or ability to learn generative AI tools (e.g. Copilot, ChatGPT) to enhance efficiency in business development processes, support initial drafting of proposals and communications and streamline research or data analysis tasks
Demonstrate adaptability and a proactive approach to leveraging technology for improved outcomes
Work sometimes requires more than 35 hours per week to perform the essential duties of the position
Qualifications include:
Bachelor's degree in business, marketing, communications or related field with five years of experience in professional services, marketing or business development (legal, accounting, finance)
APMP Bid and Proposal Management Foundation Certification (bonus)
Member of the Association of Proposal Management Professionals (bonus)
