Western Grater Contracting is a highly specialized contractor serving Vancouver Island. Our services include blasting and slope stabilization, drilling, shoring and shotcrete shoring, grouting and anchors. Our experienced team delivers safe and efficient solutions for technically challenging excavation and construction projects, maintaining the highest standards of safety and client satisfaction.


WGC has openings for Class 1 (Urban) Blaster to join our team. Reporting to the Superintendent, you will work closely with the drilling and blasting crews to plan, coordinate, and execute blasts on the project in line with our SOP for surface blasting. You will communicate any requirements for blasting that you see necessary from a safety perspective and operations perspective to the Site Superintendent/Foreman looking after your area.


Duties & Responsibilities:



Coordinating explosives required for the day Counting and recording all explosive products used in each blast Co-ordinate your blaster helpers efficiently and ensure that they are following the best practices laid out in our Blasting SOP. Updating Superintendent/Foreman on blast time changes (delays or advancement of the schedule) Coordinating guarding locations, clearing the blast area, and coordinating warning before blasting as per Regulatory requirements and our Blasting SOP Review the blast plan and site conditions before each blast and communicate any problems or differences found in the field versus the plan Coordinate your explosive quantity requirements for the day based on the blast plan Communicate Blast Zone requirements based on the loading and any problem areas in the loading that may require a change to the blast zone area Communicate any changes in the blast time planned for that blast to the Superintendent/Foreman Work with the project team to plan and schedule a work sequence to maximize the potential of the project Provides training for helpers, as required Execute the blast as per our SOP for surface blasting, with the highest regard for safety, and professionalism

Qualifications & Skills:



1st Class Surface Blaster Worksafe BC Construction Blasting Ticket and/or Ministry of Mines ticket Thorough understanding of close proximity drill & blast methods applied under various site conditions Read and understand blast plans as required on site Strong knowledge of grouting principles, including quality control documentation Experience with basic power and construction tools Self-motivated with the ability to work independently and as part of a larger team Willingness to learn, develop new skills, and mentor Strong work ethic and a safety-oriented mindset Fit to work: able to see, hear, walk, stand, lift to 50 lbs, and work in deep, confined spaces Holds a valid driver's license and can travel within the Province of BC Basic computer skills: experience with electronic timesheet entry (e.g., B2W, Hard Dollar) is an asset Strong verbal and written communication skills. Local Residence within Southern Vancouver Island

Compensation:



This is a Unionized position with WGC - BC Regional Council of Carpenters. This position will earn Union wages and will have access to extended Union healthcare and benefits, a Union-sponsored pension plan, and additional training through the Training Plan. Unionized wage range for this position is $42.14 - $47.67 per hour (based on candidate's experience), plus 12% vacation/statutory holiday pay.
