Job Summary

The Team

The BC Coroners Service is responsible, under the Coroners Act, for conducting thorough, independent investigations of factors contributing to the unexpected, unattended or unexplained deaths of persons in BC; and for issuing related recommendations to assist in preventing future deaths and improving community safety and quality of life for all British Columbians. The Role

The Coroner, Decedent Management Specialist is a Coroner appointed under section 54 of the Coroners Act who investigates deaths and supports other coroners' investigations by providing the Coroners Service with secure and dignified body storage options for as long as the body remains under coronial authority. The Coroner, Decedent Management Specialist will operate a morgue in the Vancouver area and perform visual examinations, photography and collect biological specimens for the purpose of toxicology testing on decedents arriving to the morgue from the place of death. This position will manage inventories of decedents in morgues utilized by the Coroners Service across the province and works to expedite the release of decedents to families. The position collaborates with internal and external partners to ensure compliance with legislated authorities and policy standards.

Qualifications:

Education and Experience Requirements


Completion of an undergraduate degree in business administration, legal, medical, social sciences or a related field plus three (3) years related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and/or relevant experience may be considered. Minimum of three (3) years experience in operations management in progressively challenging roles and responsibilities. Minimum of three (3) years experience in managing logistical operations and coordinating services with multiple partners. Minimum of three (3) years experience gathering, synthesizing, evaluating and interpreting information from diverse sources.

Preference may be given to applicants with:


A Master's degree or greater in business administration, logistics, legal, or relevant social sciences discipline. Experience in morgue management and coordination. Experience in operations management. Experience working with diverse partners, including law enforcement, healthcare professionals, and Indigenous communities. Previous experience working in a death investigation (coroner) system. Experience assessing risk and exercising judgement in a complex, public facing and demanding work environment. Experience managing a budget. Experience in government or a public sector agency. Experience in effectively communicating with individuals in sensitive or emotional circumstances. Applicants who self-identify as having Indigenous heritage (First Nations, Metis or Inuit).

Must be willing and able to manage sensitive, graphic, and confidential information.
