Compensation Range $5,209.17 - $7,485.33 CAD Monthly

In the normal course, employees will be hired, transferred or promoted between the minimum and midpoint of the salary range for a job.

Summary
To manage administrative, finance and communications aspects for the Animal Welfare Program (AWP) within the Faculty of Land and Food Systems. The AWP Research Coordinator will work closely with the AWP faculty to facilitate grant applications, produce reports to granting agencies, manage grant accounts, communicate information regarding the program, coordinate outreach events, and manage AWP space and equipment.
Organizational Status
Works under the supervision of and reports to the faculty members of the Animal Welfare Program. Liaises with the Faculty\'s administrative offices - Dean\'s Office, finance, communications as well as central administrative units such as Research Services, Payment & Procurement and Financial Operations. Acts as the main information source for external sponsoring organizations, funding agencies and industry.
Work Performed
- Drafts applications to granting agencies for review, following established formats and guidelines. Duties include verifying budgets, identifying additional funding sources, and managing the submission process.
- Acts as first point of contact for funding groups and other outside agencies, works with faculty to draft summary and progress reports of research findings
- Monitors grant accounts on an ongoing basis, reviewing financial statements, understanding the budgets, advising faculty members when there is a need for action (i.e. spending down accounts, accounts nearing their end date).
- Edits and proofs final documents such as contracts, academic proposals, and scientific communications;
- Develops outreach publications by determining/proposing articles to pitch such as faculty members receiving awards, the types of research they want to showcase, student accomplishments and conferences to promote. Working closely with LFS Marketing and Communications team.
- Coordinates AWP communication with prospective students, outside institutions and the external community, including the Program\'s website, internal blog and social media.
- Improves the efficiency of management of the AWP research grants, administrative and communications functions.
- Responsible for planning and managing AWP outreach events such as public lectures and advisory board meetings; advises faculty on appropriate venue/logistics.
- Arranges work space for AWP students and researchers, providing orientation and if appropriate, liaising with the Dairy Centre in Agassiz to ensure the smooth transition of international visitors.

Consequence of Error/Judgement
The Research Coordinator helps faculty meet timelines for grant proposals, reports and other duties. Failure to do so could mean not meeting application deadlines and loss of funding. S/he must understand and respect the confidential nature of some information that may be disclosed, such as details regarding grant accounts, and information relating to faculty members, students and others. This position is also responsible for maintaining relationships with other researchers and members of the AWP community, including adjunct faculty members and sponsoring organizations. Judgment is required by the Research Coordinator to communicate effectively with the various groups; failure to do so will reflect poorly on the reputation of the AWP, Faculty and the University.
Supervision Received
Reports directly to the faculty members of the AWP - the Research Coordinator works independently on a day-to-day basis. Faculty members will provide instruction in account management, preparation of grant applications and reports, and other matters during weekly meetings.
Supervision Given
May coordinate and oversee activities of Work Learn undergraduate students. The Research Coordinator will help faculty delegate AWP activities (e.g. social media campaigns, research assistance for graduate students) and in this role may coordinate and oversee activities of graduate students and others in outreach and other events.
Minimum Qualifications
- Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline.
- Minimum of two years experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications
- Masters is preferred with experience in scholarly research, interest and experience in Animal Welfare or related discipline will be considered an asset.
- UBC experience is an asset with knowledge of UBC s payroll, finance and other administrative systems.
- Experience in preparing reports for granting agencies
- Knowledge of qualitative and quantitative research methods
- Knowledge of internal and external funding opportunities available to UBC researchers and graduate students Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
- Ability to deal effectively with a diversity of people from students, faculty members to members of supporting organizations.

- Ability to effectively manage multiple tasks and priorities. strong organizational skills.
