Sun Life is looking for someone to lead our Canadian sustainability team, reporting to the VP, Partnerships, Innovation and Sustainability (Canada). Our ideal candidate is passionate about sustainability and has deep experience working in the field. Our Partnerships, Innovation and Sustainability team acts as a central resource to the Canadian business, manages strategy development and execution, monitors sustainability trends and issues, and is responsible for reporting and communications as it pertains to engagement of key stakeholders. The team leads the work to embed sustainable practices into our business and leverages a network of sustainability champions from different business units and regions in which we operate in Canada.

The AVP role is high-impact, high visibility and an outstanding opportunity for a leader who cares deeply about driving environmental, social, and business impact. This is the perfect fit for a purpose driven leader whose role will be to ensure the sustainability team has the right strategic alignment, priorities, and support to drive short-, medium- and long-term outcomes.

What you will do:

  • Responsible for developing the Canada Sustainability Plan and leading execution of key pillars.
  • Drive accountability for sustainability commitments related to Canada.
  • Develop action plans with business unit strategy leaders within SL Canada to embed sustainability further into their strategic plans, and report on progress.
  • Collaborate with functional partners to develop and maintain metrics and KPIs to measure outcomes against both internal objectives and external benchmarks.
  • In coordination with the Corporate Sustainability team:
  • monitor pending ESG-related regulatory actions and define implications for Sun Life Canada.
  • Develop guidance, practices and tools to facilitate assessment of baseline carbon footprint roadmaps and oversee the implementation of Climate Transition plans for all Canadian business units.
  • Champion a culture of sustainability through ongoing organizational communications and education.
  • Working with the Director, Sustainability, support the development of the action plan to implement the focus area of impact initiative for Canada.
  • Engage with external stakeholders and represent Sun Life at sustainability events to gather information and bring best practices to the organization.
  • Serve as subject matter expert on sustainability initiatives, metrics, and terminology
  • Provide leadership on mandate, objectives, and agenda for the Canada Sustainability Council to ensure this forum is a catalyst for purpose led decision making.
  • Provide leadership and perspectives on broader enterprise sustainability initiatives as required
What you need to succeed:
  • Experience with ESG disclosures, reporting frameworks and rating, including but not limited to, the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosure (TCFD), the Sustainability Accounting Standards Board (SASB), the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), the Corporate Sustainability Assessment (CSA), MSCI, ISS and Sustainalytics.
  • Demonstrated track record leading in a matrix environment, successfully influencing leaders across lines of business/functions in driving a major initiative or change agenda.
  • Strategic thinker who can set a vision and agenda, identify emerging issues, analyze potential impacts, and translate ideas and insights into viable recommendations for action.
  • Superior analytical skills and thought leadership with ability to frame issues and problems and seek optimal solutions
  • Exceptional organization, coordination, communication, and program management skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, set priorities and effectively delegate.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Experience with executive leadership and/or board presentations, meeting facilitation, problem solving and solution development.
  • Minimum of 8-10 years of demonstrated knowledge and experience in sustainability strategy and how to implement in large organizations (prefer Financial Services or similar)
  • MBA, Masters in sustainability management, public policy or equivalent an asset.
  • Advanced level of English and French required for Quebec applicants - interactions with English-speaking customers or partners

The Base Pay range is for the primary location for which the job is posted. It may vary depending on the work location of the successful candidate or other factors. In addition to Base Pay, eligible Sun Life employees participate in various incentive plans, payment under which is discretionary and subject to individual and company performance. Certain sales focused roles have sales incentive plans based on individual or group sales results.
