The Opportunity

The Chief Architect of Global Data Technology is responsible for the delivery of designs and solutions for the data platform across Manulife and all its segments. This leader ensures business capabilities are designed with the flexibility and efficiency to provide market leading data and analytics capabilities to our customers and stakeholders to achieve our ambition of being a digital customer leader. As Global Data's chief architect, you will play a key technical leadership role in building and maintaining the design principles and approved technology patterns that drive consistency in our solutions and capabilities globally. You will work very closely with the architecture teams in our data offices and segment IT teams as well as our data engineers and data scientists to collaborate and form your vision and strategy for Manulife's global data architecture. Technical excellence and business understanding will be required in this role to design and maintain the evolution of the data platform so that it meets the needs of a variety of use cases based on strategic business value, analytics, and AI/ML products. In addition, the leader must have the ability to align all stakeholders through the various governance committees, while having a deep understanding of how to execute on the business strategy.

Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain architecture patterns and a playbook for Global Data that reflects our global technology strategy
  • Forward-looking strategic thought leadership identifying emerging technology trends both internal and external to Manulife and formulating value propositions and actionable strategies
  • Leading a team of architects (3-5)
  • Leading architecture forums, publishing technology strategy and presenting to technology leaders and business executives, providing thought leadership around technical solutions
  • Designing for both functional and non-functional qualities, including availability, resiliency, security, privacy, etc.
  • Assisting the business in the scoping and planning of upcoming initiatives and roadmap items
  • Participating in or leading in producing conceptual, solution, and component-level architectures and associated artifacts
  • Reviewing, advising, and providing feedback on architectures produced within and outside the team
  • Developing reference architecture and reference implementation patterns
  • Mentoring and growing other technologists within the firm
  • Leading the end-to-end solution design and architecture for key data and analytics initiatives.
  • Contributing to or leading definition of standards, guidance, and points-of-view that enable engineers to thrive and cross-enterprise thinking to become the norm
  • Presenting architecture and innovative ideas to executive leadership for the purposes of alignment and key decision making
  • Connecting your business and technical insights to develop innovative proposals for evolving Manulife's data and analytics platforms, introducing new products or capabilities, or improving processes that benefit the firm or its customers

What we are looking for
  • Proven 5-10 years professional experience in data including a university degree in Engineering, Computer Science or equivalent program or experience
  • Ability to own architecture and influence strategic direction and vision for the future across a large organization
  • Desire and ability to understand diverse business domains and develop architectures that meet the current and anticipated business needs across a broad set of partners
  • Ability to evaluate new technologies and know the latest industry trends.
  • Stays current on industry and technological advances and best practices within the technology area and able to articulate this knowledge including languages, frameworks, techniques and industry trends
  • Good judgment and the ability to handle high pressure situations
  • Experience with data and application integration patterns, APIs, messaging, streaming, sync/async
  • Experience addressing operational and non-functional concerns (e.g. horizontal & vertical scalability, performance, maintainability, load distribution, resilience, recovery, security and privacy)
  • Experience with Cloud Native (12-Factor) Architecture and Infrastructure Patterns
  • Knowledge of the enterprise technology space: languages, frameworks, techniques, and industry trends
  • Ability (and preference) to work in an Agile environment
  • Ability to devise, develop and apply innovative technology to solutions that would benefit our clients
  • Refined presentation and communication skills and expertise interfacing and communicating effectively with both engineers and executives
