Autism Nova Scotia delivers programming in Halifax and in nine communities across Nova Scotia through our Regional Autism Centers. Our three program divisions are: Social & Community Inclusion; Employment Support; and Family and Caregiver Support. Autism Arts Coordinator \xe2\x80\x93 Halifax Term:\xe2\x80\xaf10 Month (September 2023- June 2024) with possibility of extend/renew Start Date:\xe2\x80\xafSeptember 2023 - June 2024 Accountability: The Autism Arts Coordinator is accountable to the Recreation Manager. The Autism Arts Coordinator shall provide frontline facilitation and support to participants enrolled in the Autism Arts program Position location: Halifax, Nova Scotia Salary: TBD Competition No. 2023- 029 What you\xe2\x80\x99ll be doing\xe2\x80\xa6 The Autism Arts program invites children, youth, and young adults ages 5-25\xe2\x80\xafwho are on the autism spectrum to explore art mediums through self-expression. The program creates an opportunity for new friendships to develop and participants to take part in a positive recreational experience within the community. Autism Arts incorporates a team-teaching approach, with the Autism Arts Coordinator and the Art Educator who work together to maximize the success of each participant\xe2\x80\x99s experience.\xe2\x80\xafAutism Arts consists of eight-week sessions that take place on Saturdays during the months of October \xe2\x80\x93 December (Fall Term), January \xe2\x80\x93 March (Winter Term), and March \xe2\x80\x93 May (Spring Term).   • Post-secondary degree or actively studying in recreation, behavioral intervention or other related studies
  • Clear, current Criminal Records Check
  • Clear, current Child Abuse Registry Check
  • Current CPR and First Aid Certification (considered an asset, but not necessary)
  • Non-violent Crisis Intervention Certification or willingness to acquire
Minimum experience:
  • Prior experience working with children, youth and adults
  • 1-3 years\' experience working with individuals with autism
  • Demonstrated leadership experience overseeing groups of 10 or more people
  • Experience in leadership roles
  • Proficiency or experience in internal communication software (such as MS Teams) and external communication software (such as Zoom) considered an asset
Minimum skills and ability:
  • Reliable and responsible
  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal)
  • Strong working knowledge of evidence-based strategies for supporting individuals with autism
  • Strong program facilitation skills
  • Calm professional demeanor under pressure
  • Strong computer skills- Strong working knowledge of Word, Outlook, Excel
  • Ability to learn new software systems quickly
  • Ability to form strong professional relationships with community partners, participants, families, and colleagues
  • Ability to effectively work under tight deadlines and manage projects independently
  • Analytic ability to collect data for the purposes of program evaluation and program management
  • Self-starter who can work independently and enthusiastically with our team
  • Strong problem solving, critical thinking and ability to practically and professionally adapt
  • Strong organizational skills, analytical skills and keen attention to detail
Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Conduct all intakes for new participants
  • Manage all correspondence with participants and caregivers
  • Create visual supports based on Art Educator\xe2\x80\x99s weekly activities
  • Manage all Autism Arts volunteers and casual volunteers
  • Pair all participants with assigned volunteers
  • Facilitate all weekly sessions
  • Support volunteers and participants to achieve the aims and purpose of the Autism Arts program
  • Work with program participants on a series of recreational art experiences
  • Responding to client enquiries in a timely way
  • Collect data as part of ongoing program evaluation and compose regular reports on program progress
  • Communicate with participants and families
  • Communicate with families and participants on an ongoing basis
  • Adhere to all policies and procedures including those identified in the Policies and Procedures Manual and the Staff Manual
  • Administrative tasks related to session planning
  • Update and maintain program documentation for each participant
  • Other duties as required
