Position Summary
The Director of Athletics is a senior leadership role responsible for overseeing the vision, direction, and delivery of all athletic programs and services at Hollyburn. This role ensures an outstanding Member experience by maintaining excellence in program development, service quality, facility standards, and team leadership. Reporting directly to the CEO, the Director of Athletics collaborates with department heads, activity committees, and external partners to ensure Hollyburn continues to be a leader in private club athletics.
Position Responsibilities
Leadership & Strategic Direction - 30%
Lead the overall strategy, planning, and delivery of athletics programs across tennis, squash, fitness, aquatics, badminton, pickleball, youth, and other existing and emerging activities.
Provide visionary leadership to a large, multidisciplinary team of professionals and coaches, ensuring high engagement, collaboration, and performance.
Monitor trends in the athletic industry and implement innovative practices that keep Hollyburn at the forefront of Member offerings.
Partner with fellow directors and managers to promote cross-departmental collaboration and Club-wide service excellence.
Proactively manage stakeholder relationship and ensure timely, thoughtful communication with Members on program updates, changes, and strategic initiatives.
Maintain and continuously evolve a service culture aligned with Hollyburn's core values of Community, Respect, Hospitality, Evolve, and Magic.
Operational Excellence - 30%
Oversee daily operations of all athletic facilities, ensuring smooth service delivery, maintenance standards, and a premium Member experience.
Ensure programs are aligned with Member needs and Club goals, using data, feedback, and industry benchmarks to inform program planning.
Uphold risk management practices in all areas, including equipment use, youth programming, aquatics, and fitness facilities.
Develop and implement effective scheduling and space allocation strategies to maximize usage and satisfaction across all athletic venues.
Team Development - 15%
Champion communication across all departments, serving as a conduit between senior management team and athletics staff to ensure alignment, clarity and collaboration.
Hire, mentor, and support departmental managers and staff within all athletic disciplines.
Foster a culture of continuous improvement, professional development, and shared success.
Ensure team Members uphold the Club's standards of service, safety, and professionalism.
Financial Management - 15%
Prepare, monitor, and manage operating and capital budgets for all athletic areas.
Achieve and exceed annual financial targets through strategic programming, effective cost control, and Member engagement.
Develop and promote high-impact programming and experiences that drive Member participation and revenue growth across all athletic areas.
Stakeholder Engagement - 10%
Serve as a key liaison between the Club and athletic governing bodies, industry professionals, and peer clubs to ensure best-in-class standards.
Attend and present at Activity Committee meetings, contributing insights, updates, and seeking feedback to enhance services.
Act as an ambassador for the Club within the greater community and industry.
Skills & Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Recreation Management, Sports Science, Kinesiology, or related field; advanced credentials or certifications an asset.
Minimum 5 years of progressive leadership experience in a multi-sport or private club environment.
Demonstrated success in designing and managing comprehensive athletic programming across various disciplines.
Exceptional leadership, interpersonal, and team-building skills; ability to engage, inspire, and develop staff at all levels.
Financial acumen with a proven track record in budget planning, forecasting, and revenue growth.
Superior communication and conflict resolution skills; able to navigate Member feedback with professionalism and empathy.
Proficiency in industry software and systems (e.g., POS, scheduling, CRM, or club management platforms).
Own transportation is an asset due to the Club's location.
