The SGC-Toronto Laboratory within the Temerty Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto, is offering an exciting job opportunity for a Associate Director, Strategy & Partnerships to bring strategic operational and programmatic leadership, direction, and oversight in order to contribute to and ensure the success of SGC-Toronto Laboratory. As the senior administrative member of the team, the incumbent will play a pivotal leadership role in the strategic development and management of the initiative.

Reporting to the SGC Chief Scientist and Director/CEO, the Associate Director, Strategy & Partnerships will work with a high level of autonomy in support of a number of strategic initiatives that aim to further develop and promote the SGC's and UofT's research objectives, including cross-sectorial internal and external partnerships. The Associate Director will also have a central role in the application development, process management and implementation of funding initiatives, including major research grants. The Associate Director, Strategy & Partnerships will work with SGC scientists in Toronto to identify and establish collaborations (industry and academic), research grants (federal, provincial and industry) and contracts (industry and academic) under conditions that are consistent with the academic principles of the University of Toronto and the open science principles of the SGC.

The Associate Director will also be the primary contact between the SGC and University and be an expert on all inter-institutional matters between SGC and UofT including policies, procedures, protocols, requirements for funding applications, research contracts and agreements, while ensuring adherence to SGC's open science policy.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Analyzing market data to determine trends and effectiveness of programs and initiatives
  • Researching and recommending new opportunities for external collaborations and partnerships
  • Developing plans that support research collaborations and advance technologies
  • Developing and implementing strategies to maximize the economic and social impact of commercialization partnerships
  • Writing solicitation documentation in support of commercialization activities
  • Promoting research initiatives to increase program visibility and reputation
  • Providing consultation and advice on the application of University policies and procedures
  • Providing detailed information to researchers and students regarding University policies, governmentfunding programs, and other relevant information within the commercialization and entrepreneurship arena
Essential Qualifications:
  • Master's Degree in a scientific discipline relevant to biomedical discovery (biochemistry, structural biology, molecular or chemical biology, pharmacology, drug discovery) or equivalent. Ph.D would be considered an asset.
  • Six to seven years' experience managing complex relationships, strategy development and implementation of academic and research programs, preferably in a university environment or other large organization.
  • Experience building successful partnerships with granting organizations, industry patient advocacy groups, government and other not-for profit organizations.
  • Demonstrated experience in financial and communications management.
  • Experience supervising staff.
  • Experience working with complex groups and building relationships with academic staff, faculty members and both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Experience working with national and international funding opportunities.
  • Experience in resolving diverse issues relating to such areas as strategic implementation, operational, and Commercialization; and determines appropriate courses of action.
  • Exceptional oral communication skills, presentation and writing skills.
  • Proven ability to assess opportunities in a variety of science and technical disciplines.

USW Pay Band 17 -- $96,978 with an annual step progression to a maximum of $124,017. Pay scale and job class assignment is subject to determination pursuant to the Job Evaluation/Pay Equity Maintenance Protocol.
