About the role

Canadian Blood Services is looking for a Regular Full-Time Associate Director, Strategic Financial Management to join our dynamic Strategic Financial Management team. The work of an Associate Director, Strategic Financial management is integral to Canadian Blood Services\' role as Canada\'s Lifeline.

The Strategic Financial Management team forms a small team that works collaboratively at senior levels of the organization, supporting the Executive Management Team and other senior management in formulating and executing the organization\'s SFM strategy including that related to the Productivity and Efficiently Program. The team is actively involved in a variety of SFM activities such as diagnosis and problem solving, benchmarking, verbal and written communication, data gathering and analysis, workshop design and facilitation, presenting to clients, and managing client relationships.

In this role, you will be responsible for delivering a broad range of strategic financial management consulting services, business analysis and business enhancement activities in support of the organization.

Key responsibilities include:

The following specific areas of expertise are required by the Associate Director, Strategic Financial Management in order to deliver on the SFM mandate.

Productivity Strategy Formulation and Planning

  • Drives the execution of productivity planning including the development of strategy formulation and planning tools and frameworks and facilitates workshops with Senior Leaders and the Executive Management Team.
  • Facilitates senior management decision-making by analysing, summarizing, and presenting choices around different strategy alternatives.
  • Provide assistance and guidance for senior management around the process for integrated strategic, operational and financial planning at Canadian Blood Services, including identifying appropriate process linkages to the corporate productivity goals.
Productivity Management and Reporting
  • Provides broad subject matter expertise in productivity management and measurement to translate the productivity goals into measurable and operational terms, in support of the corporate goals and reporting processes.
  • Design a reporting calendar that ensures senior leaders have the time to develop and prepare materials in support of the Productivity Steering Committee.
  • Offers advice and support to senior leaders to assist in the design, calculation, and documentation of performance measures.
Productivity Portfolio Management
  • Designs models, tools, and concepts to enhance the productivity portfolio reporting process, including the identification of productivity gaps.
  • Supports the management of the productivity portfolio and analyses key elements including benefits, costs, and risks to support executive decision making.
  • Prepares in-depth analysis of the productivity portfolio, assessing and providing advice and recommendations on the composition of the portfolio and actions to improve its overall performance including the identification of any productivity gaps.
Internal Product Costing / External Benchmarking
  • Leads the development and enhancement of internal product costing and external benchmarking exercises. This includes ABO and ABO CMWG benchmarking, Hema Quebec benchmarking and any other relevant blood operator.
  • Prepares reports for Senior Leaders, EMT and Board to disseminate product costing and benchmark results on an annual basis at a minimum.
  • Works with Senior Leaders and EMT to ensure understanding, support and sponsorship of product costing and benchmarking data.
Performs other related duties as required.

Education, Training and Experience:
  • University degree in a relevant discipline, preferably in business or accounting, from a recognized academic institution. A Master\'s degree is an asset.
  • A CPA or CMA is required.
  • 10+ years of experience in strategy formulation, planning, execution, and management.
  • Experience in quality, preferably in biotechnology, pharmaceutical or medical devices, and experience in blood bank industries are assets.
  • 10+ years of experience working with an operations organization in a changing environment leading and deploying organizational development initiatives and demonstrating highly demonstrated consulting skills is required.
  • Experience and expertise in the following areas: accounting, financial analysis, change management, organizational development, culture change & development and consultation.
  • Equivalent work experience, training and education may be considered.

  • Ability to conduct business professionally and collaboratively at all levels of an organization from front-line staff to the Executive Management Team and Board of Directors.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English.
  • Sound knowledge of strategy management, strategy execution, enterprise performance management, portfolio management, and change management/execution.
  • Sound knowledge of Canadian Blood Services\' business processes, regulations, and quality environment is an asset.
  • Demonstrated experience aligning Organizational Development and organizational objectives and strategies; a strong program developer and implementer who has participated in a strategy setting.
  • Excellent people, communication, presentation, and group facilitation skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and negotiation abilities; experience working with and through networks and partnerships and builds relationships easily at all levels of an organization.
  • Flexible and resilient; able to deal with a complex business environment and to find creative and innovative solutions to issues, generating new approaches that enhance operational effectiveness.
  • Project management skills and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously; able to work independently, be decisive and confident.
  • Senior Business Acumen; effectively handles sensitive and strategic and operational initiatives with tact, diplomacy, and confidentiality.
