The Department of Physical Therapy at The University of British Columbia (UBC), along with its partner, the Centre for Heart Lung Innovation (HLI), invite applications for a full-time faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor, tenure-track, in the field of cardiovascular exercise physiology and rehabilitation. This position will be based at St. Paul\xe2\x80\x99s Hospital.

This position is located within a healthcare facility. Therefore, this position requires successful verification of full vaccination against Covid-19 provided prior to the start date, as required by the provincial health mandate.

The Department of Physical Therapy is currently comprised of 15 full-time faculty members, including one Endowed Chair and 4 Canada Research Chairs, over 100 clinical faculty and 22 support staff. There are 260 professional entry-level Master of Physical Therapy (MPT) students, 58 graduate students and 16 postdoctoral research fellows. The Department has a strong research culture with approximately $5 million of Primary Investigator grant funding in 2020-21. Physical Therapy faculty members have research affiliations with hospital-based institutes including Vancouver Coastal Health Research Institute (www.vchri.ca), Providence Research (www.providenceresearch.ca), university-based centres and institutes (www.ubc.ca/directories/institutescentres.html), as well as many other collaborative opportunities.

The Department of Physical Therapy\xe2\x80\x99s key coursework activity relates to the training of students to become practicing Physical Therapists. The Master of Physical Therapy (MPT) program is rigorous and scholarly and delivers a high standard of instruction and creative opportunities for learning, which provides students with a strong foundation to support the practice of the profession. The three core streams of the program are musculoskeletal, neuro, and cardiorespiratory theory and practice.

The HLI (www.hli.ubc.ca) is situated at the St. Paul\xe2\x80\x99s Hospital campus of UBC and is home to over 40 Principal Investigators (PIs) from UBC and Simon Fraser University. HLI has 50,000 square feet of lab space and direct access to patients and patient biospecimens, including cardiovascular and pulmonary tissues samples, which are housed in well-curated and phenotyped biobanks. The HLI is looking to expand its growing team of PIs specializing in clinical exercise physiology, cardiorespiratory physiology, pulmonary rehabilitation, and cardiac rehabilitation.

Reporting to the Head of the UBC Department of Physical Therapy, the successful candidate will develop an independent research program related to cardiovascular exercise physiology and/or cardiac rehabilitation and will contribute teaching and service to the Department of Physical Therapy, as well as provide mentorship and training to, graduate, and postgraduate learners.

The successful candidate will hold a PhD in a field relevant to physical therapy (ie. exercise and movement science, rehabilitation medicine, physiology, etc). A minimum of one year of Postdoctoral experience is required. Being eligible for licensure as a physical therapist in Canada is preferred but not required. The successful candidate will have demonstrated evidence of ability in teaching and will be expected to participate in the graduate and postgraduate teaching activities of the unit. The incumbent will also show demonstrated ability in scholarly activity and will be expected to provide service to the University and the broader academic and professional community.
