The Max Bell School of Public Policy at McGill University invites applications for a ranked contract academic staff position to work with the Centre for Media, Technology and Democracy developing a research program on misinformation, disinformation, and information ecosystem studies. The position will take a lead role in a new research project studying the Canadian media ecosystem. Candidates should be a recognized scholar who has led qualitative and/or ethnographic research into mis and disinformation. Candidates should have demonstrated success in policy-relevant scholarship in these areas and have experience in practical policy development, analysis and/or engagement. The appointment is expected to be at the rank of Assistant Professor and is primarily oriented towards research. The expected start date for this appointment is May 1, and the appointment will be for three years. Salary is negotiable and commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Job Duties

Conducting policy-relevant research in the area of information ecosystem studies, managing a research agenda and team on issues of misinformation, disinformation, and information ecosystem studies, and providing academic service within the Max Bell School of Public Policy.

Qualifications and Education Requirements

Candidates must have completed their PhD and have expertise in policy-relevant research. The ideal candidate should have:

  • experience overseeing research teams and large research projects on misinformation, disinformation, and information ecosystem studies;
  • demonstrated expertise in utilizing qualitative research methods;
  • a history of engaging with policymakers in the development or analysis of policy;
  • enthusiasm and ability in engaging with media for the discussion and analysis of policy issues.
McGill University is an English-language university where most teaching and research activities are conducted in the English language, thereby requiring English communication both verbally and in writing. A working knowledge of French is encouraged.
