Position Status: Full-Time

Salary: $21.64 - $27.63 per hour (Nova Scotia Childcare Wage Scale)

Start Date: January 2024

Location : Purdy\xe2\x80\x99s Wharf YMCA Child Care Centre (1969 Upper Water Street, Halifax, Nova Scotia)

The Opportunity

Reporting to the Director of Purdy\xe2\x80\x99s Wharf YMCA Child Care Centre, the Assistant Director is accountable for creating a stimulating, safe and nurturing environment for children to learn and grow at the YMCA. The Assistant Director is responsible for ensuring all YMCA Playing to Learn program requirements are met and exceeded while complying with the Education & Early Childhood Development Regulations and National YMCA Child Protection Standards.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, coach, train and implement YMCA Playing to Learn Curriculum for program staff in accordance with the goals and objectives of the Child Care Centre to foster maximum development for each child\xe2\x80\x99s potential and growth; including professional development opportunities, internal play in action assessments (at both Centre\xe2\x80\x99s) and weemarkable support
  • Complete administration duties as required; including correspondence with provincial licensing staff, ensure all paperwork is in order for licensing inspections, supporting staff to ensure licensing regulations are being followed, registrations, and curriculum documentation
  • Create a positive team environment by illustrating core leadership competencies, engaging in relationship building and creating a sense of belonging for all staff and members of the facility
  • In programming ratio as required; supporting Centre(s) when Director\xe2\x80\x99s are away; including potential coverage at Fall River YMCA Early Learning Child Care Centre
  • Consistently represent YMCA\xe2\x80\x99s values and mission; comply with all YMCA Policies, Procedures & Best Practices, Child Protection, Provincial Licensing and Health & Safety regulations
  • Achieve registration targets by optimizing room capacities via parent tours and utilizing and managing waitlists
  • Ensures high service standards and satisfaction ratings throughout all programs and achieves quality targets established through association goals and national standards
  • Use a variety of teaching techniques that include, but are not limited to, modelling, observing, questioning, demonstrating, and reinforcing
  • Plan, implement, and assess developmentally appropriate indoor and outdoor learning environments for young children that support emotional and social development, while understanding and encouraging positive self-concepts
  • Develop relationships with external partners to enhance care for children and families
  • Coordinate staff coverage for sick and vacation days
  • Respond to parent and staff concerns
  • Assist in the completion of yearly staff performance reviews
  • Participate in parent committee
  • Other duties as assigned by Centre Director
Qualifications & Skills
  • Early Childhood Education Diploma or equivalent and NS Classification; minimum Level 2 required
  • Minimum of 1-3 years in a Supervisory role
  • Strong working knowledge and experience in Early Learning, Child/Youth Development, Inclusion and Nova Scotia Child Care Licensing Acts and Regulations
  • Maintain current first aid and CPR certification
  • Maintain a clean Criminal Record Check which includes a clear Vulnerable Sector Check
  • Provide and maintain an up-to-date Child Abuse Registry Check
  • Attend Child Abuse Protocol Training and take YMCA\xe2\x80\x99s online Child Abuse Training
