Summary

Reporting to the Controller, the Assistant Controller will support Dentons Canada\'s Controllership function which has oversight over corporate reporting, tax, audit and internal controls. The ideal candidate has a bias toward continuous process improvement and system optimization. The Assistant Controller will have significant responsibilities around monthly and annual close processes including coordination with various stakeholders and offices, and review and preparation of monthly and annual working papers and reports. Dentons Canada is in the process of implementing a new accounting and practice management system (Elite 3E), where the Assistant Controller will become a subject matter expert and assist in the development of related controls and policies.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide support in the implementation, documentation and maintenance of adequate and effective processes with a focus on improving the close and reporting cycles to ensure timely and accurate reporting.
  • Help to develop and enforce internal controls to maximize protection of company assets, policies, procedures, and workflow, as well as assist in the rollout of new processes and procedures to the accounting team.
  • Lead and collaborate with various Dentons functional areas on new initiatives to support financial close improvements.
  • Assist in coordination of monthly accounting close process to meet scheduled deadlines, including analytical review of selected operating results.
  • Preparation and review of monthly and annual working papers, reconciliations and journal entries.
  • Assist with annual audit process including preparation of financial statements and notes as well as coordinating and preparing responses to external auditor queries.
  • Preparation and review of monthly and quarterly internal reports and external banking reports.
  • Support the annual tax and compliance filings for Dentons Canada including partnership and corporation tax filings.
  • Assist with the preparation of the budget and financial forecasts, in collaboration with the FP&A team.
  • Assist with components of implementation of Elite 3E accounting and practice management system, due to go live April 2024.
  • Coach, mentor, and develop members of the Controllership Team.

Qualifications

Education:
  • Undergraduate business degree with a focus in Accounting/Finance and possessing a CPA designation.
Experience and Qualities
  • Experience in progressive accounting roles providing a broad base of experience relevant to the job description.
  • Curious: you utilize your natural curiosity to effect change - even when you don\'t have all the answers you are able to identify creative solutions to problems.
  • Collaborator/Teamwork: you have developed skills to help you build trust with various stakeholders and demonstrated effective communication to assist in pushing forward change initiatives.
  • Leadership: demonstrated ability to lead directly and by example via influence when working in a larger team.
  • Flexibility: ability to manage various deadlines simultaneously, interface with different levels of management and to thrive in a fast-paced environment, dealing with ambiguity and change in a polycentric and global enterprise.
  • Systems/Technology: you have a strong understanding how systems and technology can impact effective and efficient operations, with an advanced knowledge of Excel.
  • Experience with system implementations and/or being a power user of accounting systems an asset.
  • Experience in professional services industry an asset.
