About the Alma Mater Society (AMS) Established in 1858, the Alma Mater Society (AMS) is the oldest student government in Canada. Through representing students\xe2\x80\x99 interests, offering an array of student programs, providing advocacy, and operating a range of student-run services, the AMS fulfils its mission \xe2\x80\x9cto serve and represent the diverse student populations at Queen\xe2\x80\x99s University\xe2\x80\x9d. The AMS is a non-profit corporation with an annual budget of 12.5 million and a dynamic learning environment for hundreds of paid and volunteer student positions annually each year. Of approximately 60 salaried and 400+ waged student positions, 3 of those positions are elected executives; a President, Vice President (Operations) and Vice President (University Affairs).\xe2\x80\xaf The Executives are responsible for the operations of the AMS. Overview of Position We are seeking an experienced finance professional to join our team. The Assistant Controller, under direction of the Controller, will be responsible for the management and oversight of all monthly accounting tasks, reporting and a small team. The Assistant Controller is part of a small team of permanent staff providing corporate infrastructure year over year support in a variety of fields as student leaders fulfill annual contracts in their various operational roles. In addition, the Assistant Controller will engage with student leadership and permanent staff to establish effective working relationships and respond to accounting enquiries from diverse stakeholders including Human Resources, employees, managers, and various external agencies in a timely and accurate manner. The ideal candidate will be a CPA with both solid technical and interpersonal skills as well as the kind of analytical mindset and people skills that allow them to provide financial support and analysis directly to Executive and senior management. Main responsibilities include:
Assist Controller in year-end audit to ensure effective resolution and swift closure of auditing activities.
Investigate variances in budgets, reporting, and general accounting.
Coordinate and manage monthly financial activities, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, general accounting, payroll, and reporting.
Prepare and review month end journal entries.
Assist in the preparation of the operating budget.
Provide training, coaching, and mentoring to subordinate employees regularly and as necessary.
Review monthly bank reconciliations to ensure timeliness and accuracy of information for decision making.
Review of monthly investment accounting to ensure accuracy and completeness of financial accounts.
Manage preparation and payment of government remittances as required.
Assist in preparation and review of monthly financial statements on a consolidated basis.
Assist in preparation of reports for Finance and Risk Committee and Board
Preparation of HST returns quarterly.
Management of relations with external and internal stakeholders.
Provide timely and accurate advice, assistance, and guidance and to the student Executive and their teams on accounting practices and procedures.
Required Qualifications
Degree or an advanced degree in business administration, management, finance, accounting, or a related field
Current professional designation through a recognized governing body required.
Minimum five years relevant experience working in an accounting field
