SHIFT: 35 hours per week - Hybrid

Summary of the Position:

Reporting to the Controller, the Assistant Controller provides expert level support in the preparation of financial reports on a monthly, quarterly, and annual basis. The primary focus is on making significant contributions to the financial operations of the Society, including reporting of revenue, submission of expenses, and maintenance of internal financial controls.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Leads Senior Accountants and other Finance professionals in the preparation of internal and external financial reporting.
  • Prepares monthly internal reporting for managers.
  • Supports the annual budget in conjunction with various levels of management and Board direction.
  • Analyzes financial data to provide assistance to various levels of management in order to ensure sound business decisions are made throughout the organization.
  • Participates in systems implementations and enforcement of process controls.
  • Assists in year-end audit process.
  • Completes external reporting to Provincial and Federal government bodies.
  • Assist in financial analysis for major capital purchases and capital budget.
  • Trusted advisor to the business around all items Finance related.
  • Takes a broad perspective, influences stakeholders and presents complex information in an understandable manner.
  • Contributes to improvements to the active monitoring of the short, medium and long term cash flow forecasts and the investing function.
  • Provides expertise and contributes to the strategic direction of the financial reporting function.
  • Contributes to a culture of innovation, teamwork, agility and idea generation.
  • Comfortable demonstrating behaviors supporting diversity, equity and inclusion and workplace health, safety and wellness within the finance team and on any cross-functional working groups.
Knowledge and Skill Required for the Position:
  • Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) plus a minimum of 8 years\' experience in finance, accounting and/or investments, three years of which must be in a financial reporting function; or an equivalent combination of education and experience acceptable to the employer. Relevant experience includes, but is not limited to the following:
  • Knowledge of accounting principles and practices (GAAP and Accounting Standards for Not for Profits).
  • Knowledge and subject matter expertise in not-for-profit accounting.
  • Working knowledge of Financial Edge and Budget Management and forecasting software an asset.
  • Models exceptional standards of ethics, professionalism and five star internal and external customer service standards.
  • Embraces data, technology and automation to maximize the effectiveness and efficiency of the finance function.
  • Responsible for the hiring, onboarding, performance management, and termination of assigned staff; provide coaching and mentorship and ensure individual objectives and goals are met, celebrating individual and team successes.
  • Builds supportive and trusting relationships across all functions of the organization to ensure the financial planning and analysis function is providing value-added support to the organization
  • Passion for continuous improvement.
  • Self-starter who enjoys proactively generating, evaluating and implementing new ideas and making recommendations.
  • Demonstrated ability to navigate environment of competing priorities.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work with internal and external stakeholders at all levels.
  • Ability to successfully address and resolve conflict.
  • High level of comfort with change.

  • Strong analytical and decision-making skills.
