Job Description

Under the direction of the Communications Coordinator, and working in a collaborative team environment, the Assistant Communications Coordinator provides communications expertise and support to the various divisions in the Water and Waste Department, by executing communication strategies to build knowledge, inform and engage our customers and departmental staff. This is done primarily through the development of communication materials and campaigns. Based on the strategic direction provided by the Communications Coordinator, the Assistant Communications Coordinator is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day development and maintenance of the department's internet and intranet content, and supports internal communication initiatives and events.

As the Assistant Communications Coordinator, your duties will include:



Implementation of departmental communication strategies and develop departmental communication materials. Managing day-to-day activities related to the Department's internet and intranet websites. Supporting internal communication initiatives and events. Providing support for media relations activities. Acting as departmental liaison on City's Film and Special Events Coordinating Committee.

Your education and qualifications include:




Bachelor's Degree or Diploma in Communications, Public Relations, Political Studies or Journalism, or an equivalent combination of education and considerable experience in the field of public relations. Minimum three (3) years of related work experience in communications or public relations.

Experience implementing strategic communications plans/programs. Knowledge of communications theory and best practices.

Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, including expertise in communicating technical information in plain language.

Knowledge of a variety of relevant and contemporary technology tools, including Microsoft, multi-media and web content management software.

Ability to research, critically analyze, and synthesize information.

Organizational skills, with the ability to coordinate multiple projects and set priorities under tight deadlines. Ability to work under minimal supervision, exercise sound judgement, and manage stress during extremely busy periods.

Interpersonal skills demonstrated by the ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with stakeholders, and build consensus.

Ability to problem-solve and develop creative solutions to achieve objectives.
