Global Halifax has an exciting opportunity for a full-time Assignment Editor to join their team. Reporting to the Managing Editor, the successful candidate would be responsible for assigning camera crews and reporters and ensuring events/stories are covered. This position is part of the Global News team, which produces local newscasts 7 days a week and supports network newsgathering operations. This position requires constantly working early in the mornings and may involve a variety of other shifts including evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.You will contribute by:The following is a paraphrase of the primary functions, but does not outline all the duties and responsibilities that may be assigned to this position:

  • Managing and assigning crews to ensure stories are covered.
  • Working with the News Director and Managing Editor to maximize resources and newsgathering capabilities.
  • Identifying breaking, emerging, and original stories in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick.
  • Monitoring scanners and social media, making calls, chasing guests for all platforms as required.
  • Develop daily and long-term planning of editorial content and strategies.
  • Develop original and creative story ideas.
  • Act as a resource for reporters.
  • Communicate with other affiliates to support the network on stories of regional / national interest.
  • Work with online producers to ensure seamless transition of content across all platforms.
  • Developing news sources.
  • Occasional writing of web copy in breaking news situations.
  • Performing other duties as required.
Skills and experience you will bring:
  • Post-secondary education in broadcast journalism or a related field.
  • Previous experience working in a newsroom preferred.
  • Strong news judgement with an editorial and logistical mindset.
  • Excellent news writing skills with a high degree of competence and clarity
  • Understanding of what it takes to put together a story for broadcast and online.
  • Have a passion for local news and always be looking for new, original ideas and ways to tell stories.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Experience or ability to use social media in a professional capacity.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, adjusting to changing priorities and objectives, and able to meet strict deadlines while working under pressure.
  • Ability to work well independently as well as collaboratively in a teamwork setting.
  • Positive, can-do attitude.
  • Ability to adapt to rapidly changing technology.
  • Written and verbal French language skills are an asset.
