The Opportunity

Zurich Canada is currently looking for an Articling Student to assist our various legal counsel at Zurich Canada in protecting the interests of the company and representing the company\xc2\xb4s insureds. This position is to start in August of 2024, for a 10 month period.

The successful applicant will get practical, hands-on experience on a variety of legal matters while completing rotations in each of Zurich Canada\'s three legal departments: Claims Legal, Corporate Legal and Staff Legal.

During your rotation in Claims Legal, you will assist other coverage lawyers in their duties to protect the interests of Zurich Canada by conducting legal analysis and research to provide advice and recommendations on policy language and coverage related disputes.

During your rotation in Corporate Legal, you will assist other corporate lawyers in drafting and negotiating corporate contracts, attending client meetings, drafting client communications as well as conducting legal research and analysis on a variety of matters including insurance regulatory, corporate governance, data protection, privacy and marketing.

During your rotation in Staff Legal, you will represent Zurich Canada\xc2\xb4s insureds in all phases of litigation for matters of low technical complexity and assist other litigation lawyers in all phases of litigation for matters of low to medium technical complexity.

What You Will Do

(1) Claims Legal Rotation

  • Drive positive results by correctly applying the law and legal trends, conducting legal analysis and research, on policy language, coverage issue, or litigated issue.
  • Assist other coverage lawyers in the timely resolution of unique coverage issues and potential litigation.
  • Assist other coverage lawyers to resolve technical coverage issues and provide legal counsel and training to claims professionals and underwriters on coverage issues, policy language and specials endorsements to address coverage matters.
(2) Corporate Law Rotation
  • Work collaboratively with the other Corporate Lawyers to provide legal support to our business clients and provide practical, solutions-based legal advice across a variety of legal areas.
  • Draft and negotiate corporate contracts.
  • Conduct legal research and analysis.
  • Assist with the identification and implementation of new laws and regulations applicable to the business.
(3) Staff Legal Rotation
  • Achieve best outcomes for Zurich Canada\'s insureds by demonstrating technical excellence in case handling, trial preparation and presentation for matters of low complexity.
  • Drive positive results by correctly applying the law and legal trends, conducting legal analysis and research, preparing legal pleadings and documents, preparing for and managing pre-trial discovery, and participating in judicial or administrative hearings and trials, as required.
  • Work to have a timely resolution to matters by collaborating with the claims adjuster, developing a case strategy and escalating issues as appropriate.
  • Assist other litigation lawyers in their case handling.
Job Qualifications - What you bring to the table
  • A Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) or a Juris Doctor (J.D.) Degree; and
  • Has been approved for the Lawyer Licensing Process through the Law Society of Ontario.
OR
  • A Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) or a Juris Doctor (J.D.) Degree; and
  • Meets the prerequisites requirements for the Lawyer Licensing Process through the Law Society of Ontario and is approved prior to their start date with Zurich Canada.
