Bedore's Photo Graphic Arts Inc. operates an art gallery located in historic Uptown Saint John & planning a relocation to the historic James Peters Residence Building, located at 40 Coburg Street, Saint John, NB, with a grand opening scheduled for the fall. The Bedore's Art Gallery offers "original artistic works", primarily of New Brunswick artists, with a special concentration on artists, artisans & crafts-people from the City of Saint John. Our collection also spans to include artists from across Canada, as well as from abroad. Bedore's will also host auctions & exhibitions right at our gallery, via Shopify & Matterport, respectively.
OPENING FOR RETAIL ASSOCIATE
We are looking for a self-motivated individual to assist us with our day-to-day retail activities. This position is available for full-time or part-time hours, or for a student requiring summer employment. The job involves supporting and advising customers, who are seeking artwork to decorate their homes & offices, or for investment. In addition, the position involves the function of "Intern archivist", whereby assistance in the entry of acquisitions & consignments of artwork are entered into our inventory database, in addition to researching the origin of each work and it's artist, as well as determining other aspects of the provenance of each work is required.
Each workweek starts with a meeting with the company principals, to coordinate, plan & monitor work objectives, progress & task completion, as well as the planning & coordination of up coming events and programs. The ability to work independently is essential for the candidate to be successful in this position. Structured orientation will be provided to the successful candidate, and will span the initial 4 month probationary period. Mentoring, direction, instruction & self study in the following areas, will comprise the comprehensive training program;
- orientation on background details of NB artists and their works, exhibited in the gallery& in our online store
- orientation on background details of major Canadian Artists, their works and genres
- overview of major artistic genres, movements, masters and terminology, past & present
- assistance in digital marketing, ad design, lay-out & media selection and sometimes development or editing
- assistance in in basic art acquisition, art documentation &exhibit development
- manage database artistic work, artwork details& provenance, and artist biographies
- assist in tracking of digital marketing campaign outcomes, monitor analytics, "fine-tune" SEO and maintain followers
- promotion of the gallery & it's artists, as well as assisting in the coordination of quarterly exhibitions, events & festivals
QUALIFICATIONS
The ideal candidate for this position is a graduate of a university or college program in fine arts, art history or the humanities, along with some background in the field of art, or a creative field such as graphic design, marketing, sales, business administration or event coordination. Some of the skills required for success in this position, include:
- management wishes to create employment, so preference will be given to unemployed or underemployed applicants
- a flair for presentation & aesthetics, and a sincere interest in visual art
- background in fine arts or the equivalent education, experience in retail sales, and interest in continual learning
- some experience in blog writing, communications, social media Ad design & lead sourcing
- a desire to learn about fine art, artists and artistic history
- comprehensive skills in English is mandatory, AND spoken & written skills in French is a definite asset.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
The position is available for an immediate start date. The work-schedule for this position is 10-6PM Monday-Friday, with flexibility for occasional work on the weekend combined with weekdays days off. The gallery & office are located in uptown Saint John, NB with off-street parking available for employees. The starting pay rate will depend upon education and experience & skill level, however the budget for this position is $18-25 per hour, depending upon qualifications. Full group healthcare benefits will be offered to employees at some point during their probation period. The expectation is that at the end of the probationary period, the successful candidate would take the position of Archivist or Curator.
