Overview

Under the direction of the Natural Resource Director the Archaeologist is responsible for conducting guided and independent archaeological research within the Upper Similkameen Indian Band (USIB) Traditional Territory. The Archaeologist will liaison between governments, third parties, and the Natural Resources department on all archaeological related matters.

Participation and supervision of Archaeological Impact Assessments, Preliminary Field Reconnaissance, and Site Alterations. Assess the significance of archaeological resources using various criteria, in order to record and document, as necessary. Prepare archaeological reports, letters, proposals, and summaries in a timely manner. Must recognize and identify any safety concerns as per provincial and federal legislation. Supervise field crews in conducting archaeological surveys and sit assessments. Conduct background research and analysis, including consultation with government agencies. Maintain a friendly but professional manner with all stakeholders. Work with the USIB Natural Resources/Referrals department in developing desktop reviews of referrals (forestry, mining, exploration, industrial developments etc.) within the USIB Traditional Territory. Responsible for contacting client, community members, and other interested parties regarding access to project areas and on occasion attends meetings to report site significance evaluations. Describes, measures, counts, catalogues, and documents artifacts and other materials recovered from surveys and excavations and supervise field staff in these tasks. Assures that archaeological materials are appropriately processed for archiving, curation, and storage. Assist in delivery of high-quality reports on time and within budget, drawing upon technical and scientific knowledge, training, and experience. Prepares written reports, describing field investigations, preparing archaeological backgrounds, summarizing comparisons of archaeological artifacts, writing site descriptions, discussing, and justifying site significance assessments, and compiling references and citations for the report. Maintain confidentiality on all matters relating to the affairs of USIB. Performs other related duties and responsibilities as required, and in accordance with the USIB policies and procedures, and as directed by the Executive Liaison or their designate.

Education/Training/Certification

Undergraduate degree in archaeology or anthropology with a specialization in archaeology is required. Graduate degree in archaeology is preferred. First Aid Level One and Wildlife awareness is considered an asset. Interior Plateau field directorship, in good standing with the Archaeology Branch of British Columbia, or eligible to acquire.

Qualifications - Knowledge & Skills

Experience working outdoors in remote locations and be physically fit. Ability to work independently or as part of a team. Communicate effectively and concisely, both verbally and written form, including effective presentation skills. Knowledge of USIB referral process and procedures with the ability to apply it to archaeological research. Advanced experience with Microsoft Office 365 products. Must always follow and understand provincial Safety standards. General knowledge of archaeological artifacts associated with prehistoric and historic period cultures of the Similkameen. Strong research and analytical skills as well as problem solving methodologies. Valid Class 5 driver's license with a clean driver abstract.

Experience

Minimum 3 years' experience working in the Interior Plateau culture region as an archaeologist. Experience in completing regulatory documentation and reporting per BC archaeology guidelines. Experience with QGIS/ARCGIS.
The Archaeologist must provide the following documentation upon hire:

Pay: $33.00-$48.00 per hour

Expected hours: No less than 37.5 per week
