Course Description: Overview of the principal methods of statistical analysis and their appropriate use in sociology. Articulation of theory and empirical evidence in the construction of a sociological argument. Critical outlook on the quantification of social phenomena and on the limits of data and methods. Statistical treatment of data: descriptive analysis, bivariate analysis, causality, mediation and multiple linear regression. Introduction to weighting, inference, and evaluation of the quality of estimates. Learning to use statistical software.

Requirements:
Requirements: M.A. in sociology and completed sociology Ph.D. coursework or a more advanced training in sociology. Demonstrable track record of expertise in the field of quantitative studies in the form of previous teaching experience in the same or similar course or through publications in the field. Demonstrate a practical knowledge of SPSS and the ability to teach it. In conformity with article 5.7.1b of the Collective Agreement, in the case of a candidate who does not meet these requirements, the department reserves the right not to classify him/her in at least category A (see article 5.7.2) even if he/she has previously taught the course in question as regular part-time academic staff.
