Course Description: Introduction to Latin authors including a grammar review component. This course has variable topics and may be taken several times if the themes are different.
Theme: Selections from Suetonius
The Roman writer Suetonius (c. 70\xe2\x80\x93130) is best known for his De vita Caesarum, a collection of twelve biographies of Roman rulers from Julius Caesar to Domitian. In these biographies he provides fascinating portraits of his subjects with accounts not only of the events of their lives and their achievements, but also descriptions of their appearances, habits, daily routines, personal relationships, ancestry, and anecdotes that bring them vividly to life. In this course we will translate selections from a number of these biographies including the assassination of Julius Caesar on the Ides of March, Augustus\xe2\x80\x99 daily routine, and Nero\xe2\x80\x99s love of performing on the stage. The readings will be supplemented with advanced Latin grammar.
