Job Description


The Edmonton Police Service (EPS) is seeking a professional with a strong commitment to providing mentorship and promoting equity among applicants, who are interested in pursuing a career with the EPS. The role involves working closely with the public, as well as EPS civilian and sworn personnel, and includes the following responsibilities:

  • Create and implement a learning strategy for the Applicant Mentoring Academy (AMA) program including designing curriculum and instructional materials relative to the development of candidates who largely come from underrepresented communities.
  • Ensuring processes pursuant to the EPS Recruit Selection Unitxe2x80x99s application and hiring procedure are utilized throughout the Applicant Mentoring Academy program.
  • As requirements to applications and hiring evolve, ensuring the relevant procedures are met with the aim being best practice standards.
  • Identifying trends, practices and emerging issues that relate to equity in application and hiring practices within a policing context.
  • Identifying and eliminating systemic barriers in external employment systems to ensure the EPS represents the community it serves.
  • Recruit, select, orient, train and develop police applicants.
  • Supervise and support candidates during the 10-week program by providing advice and guidance with respect to their applications and educating them on what a career could look like with the EPS.
  • Provide coaching and leadership to academy candidates to ensure timelines, policies, procedures and regulation requirements are met, as well as coordinating workload and establishing priorities.
  • Select and orientate those internal and external instructors involved in facilitating the program.
  • Develop practical and realistic training scenarios related to aspects of policing (i.e.; communication, active listening) that will enhance the practical learning of the candidates.
  • Develop learning plans for all candidates during the academy and recommendations for action.
  • Evaluate candidates based on their performance in the Academy. This could be based on their attitude, participation, presentation skills and their respective ability to successfully complete scenario-based training.
  • Work closely with all internal partners within Recruiting Section xe2x80x93 this includes recruiters, file managers, background investigators and supervisors in the unit.
  • Maintain contact and provide guidance and advice to those who are deferred to increase their chance of success in the application process by developing an action plan to increase their competitiveness.
  • Establish and communicate performance expectations and conduct performance appraisals on the candidates.
  • Manage Applicant Mentoring Academy budget.
  • Communicate and interact with Recruit Training Section to identify trends causing issues for recent recruit training participants. Develop AMA topics and training to address those identified needs as required.
  • Develop other means of mentorship for applicants to ensure success
  • Attend, support and participate in other recruiting initiatives as needed including Run with Recruiter sessions, Information sessions, test writes, BDI workshops and similar.
  • Other related duties as required.
Qualifications
  • A university degree in Social Sciences, Education or other related discipline.
  • Experience or a certificate in Adult Education would be an asset.
  • Formal mentorship or professional coaching training/experience is an asset
  • Completion of the basic training of the Edmonton Police Service is considered an asset.
  • Previous experience performing the full range of duties of a Police Officer is highly desirable due to the nature of the position.
  • Five (5) years of progressively demonstrated experience in the Edmonton Police Service. Involvement with recruiting, selection, and training units for sworn members within the Edmonton Police Service would be beneficial.
  • Demonstrated experience in collaborating, planning and organizing curriculum development.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of policy, procedure, and best practices as it relates to Edmonton Police Service application and hiring process.
  • Well-developed, strong interpersonal and communication skills, strong written, research and analytical skills.
  • Experience with crucial conversations or relevant/related training
  • Well-developed facilitation and team building skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain a high degree of professionalism, integrity and confidentiality.
  • Demonstrated ability to present to various audiences.
  • Project and change management knowledge and skills, including the ability to manage multiple projects and people simultaneously.
  • Ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team environment and build relationships.
  • Proven ability to assess and realign priorities on an ongoing basis.
  • Demonstrated ability to work under pressure with tight, often competing deadlines.
  • Detail orientated.
  • Strong analytical, negotiation and administrative skills with a desire to serve.
  • As part of your pre-hire screening you will be required to complete an Enhanced Security Clearance. Should you accept employment with the Edmonton Police Service you acknowledge and agree to participate in future Enhanced Security Re-Clearances at scheduled intervals or in any other circumstances, exigent or otherwise, as required by Human Resources Division.
Hours of Work: 40 hours per week, Monday xe2x80x93 Friday. Hours of work may be subject to the terms and conditions of variable hours of work program. Incumbents must have the flexibility to work outside of regular business hours and to travel to alternate locations.Salary Range: 21B, Salary Grade: 063, $34.814 - $49.735 (Hourly), $2,785.10 - $3,978.80 (Biweekly), $72,691 xe2x80x93 103,846 (Annually).
