Job Description


Help promote responsible pet ownership and safe, healthy and peaceful neighborhoods. Working as an Animal Control Peace Officer will allow you to build upon your communication and problem solving skills while working towards a successful enforcement career. Your success will be measured by your ability to achieve timely results in the context of a respectful, inclusive and service-minded style.

  • Be in an environment of a diverse background of the environment, domestic animals and wildlife
  • Respond to complaints: officer initiated and publicly report incidents that occur within the scope of responsibility and Peace Officer jurisdiction
  • Practice using sound judgment and decision making to properly assess situations and determine appropriate enforcement responses under minimal supervision
  • Participate in an extensive amount of public contact and public engagement
  • Conduct detailed investigations of alleged municipal bylaw and provincial regulation violations, interview witnesses, complainants and defendants, compile, gather and prepare evidence. This may include, but will not be exclusively limited to, animal attack and animal cruelty investigations and parkland related concerns
  • Capture and care for a broad range of domestic animals and wildlife
  • Ensure pets are licensed, follow up on expired licenses, determine appropriate enforcement action by seeking voluntary compliance/issue warnings/penalty tickets and encourage citizens to be responsible pet owners
  • Conduct patrols in City parks and public spaces to ensure pets are a positive addition to the community and reuniting lost pets with their owners
  • Prepare reports and correspondence as required
  • Work in partnership with internal and external stakeholder agencies
Qualifications
  • Completion of a recognized Diploma related to Police Studies, Security or Criminology and a minimum of 3 years of customer service experience with at least 1 year of diverse law enforcement experience - OR - Grade 12 and a minimum 5 years of enforcement experience in a recognized law enforcement environment, and must have been a serving Police Officer in Canada, or employed as a Peace Officer Level I within Alberta for at least 2 years (Equivalencies may be considered)
  • Must possess or be able to obtain the Provincial Community Peace Officer I designation with completion of the Community Peace Officer Induction Program - CPOIP, as well as a Bylaw officer appointment. Those awaiting certification will be paid at a development rate
  • Must be able to obtain or have successfully completed the Physical Abilities Readiness Evaluation (P.A.R.E.)
  • Skilled in exercising tact, sound judgment and firmness in dealing with difficult situations and with the public
  • Ability to de-escalate potentially volatile situations, and to recognize and react appropriately to dangerous situations and an understanding of officer safety techniques
  • Knowledge and experience working with diverse communities
  • Experience working or volunteering in your community or with racialized people and other equity seeking groups would be considered an asset
  • Experience working with Indigenous communities would be considered an asset
  • Knowledge of another language is an asset
  • Demonstrated understanding of racism and discrimination as it pertains to law enforcement, and how bias can influence behaviour and decisions
  • Knowledge of or training in harm reduction, anti-racism, Indigenous awareness and GBA+ would be considered an asset
  • Knowledge and practical application of conflict resolution skills\xcd\xbe analytical and problem solving skills
  • Demonstrate service excellence, embracing diversity and promoting inclusiveness
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate inclusively and respectfully with diverse community members and work inclusively as part of a diverse team
  • Ability to develop and maintain positive working relationships with internal and external customers\xcd\xbe excellent interpersonal, time management, and customer service skills are required
  • Ability to prepare and deliver presentations to groups
  • Following a successful interview process, candidates must pass a Police Information Check including Vulnerable Sector check
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 driver\xe2\x80\x99s license (or provincial equivalent) and eligibility to obtain and retain a City Driver\xe2\x80\x99s Permit is required
