ABOUT THE ROLE

We have an exciting opportunity for a detailed oriented and results-driven Corporate Compliance and Reporting Analyst to join our Financial Reporting team at TransAlta. The Analyst will report directly to the Director, Financial Reporting and is primarily responsible for upholding and supporting the components of TransAlta and TransAlta Renewables\xe2\x80\x99 internal control and compliance processes to prevent material financial misstatements in line with requirements of Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) legislation and the COSO 2013 framework.
You will work collaboratively with the internal auditors, external auditors, and the business units to support TransAlta\xe2\x80\x99s Control/SOX framework by proactively identifying areas of focus, assisting in minimizing control deficiencies through regular communication with the control and process owners, working with the business units to resolve or remediate control deficiencies identified. you are also accountable for a broad range of daily, monthly, quarterly, and yearly activities and implement all administrative procedures and processes in adherence to organizational policy. Additional duties will include proposing financial policy updates, reconciliation of audit fees, and non-public financial statement preparation.
This is a full-time salaried position based out of our Head Office in Downtown Calgary, with the flexibility of a hybrid work arrangement (days in the office & days at home).
WHAT YOU WILL DO

  • Ensure corporate compliance is aligned with TransAlta\'s control framework
  • Provide support/training on SOX compliance and control review
  • Interface with external auditors and prepare engagement letters
  • Evaluate control deficiencies and track remediation
  • Obtain memos for positions on deficiencies identified
  • Assist auditors with evidence from business units
  • Review/update financial policies based on IFRS
  • Create/maintain procedures for tracking/updating finance policies
  • Facilitate annual adherence to the Finance Code of Ethics, and facilitate SOX compliance training
  • Ensure the Quarterly SOX Management Representation Letter process is completed
  • Manage monthly/quarterly finance deliverables
  • Communicate observations and escalate issues to management
  • Prepare financial statements for non-public subsidiaries of TransAlta Corporation on a quarterly and annual basis
  • Coordinate information for disclosure and reconcile contradictory information
  • Coordinate internal review processes and liaise with auditors
  • Maintain documentation evidencing reviews, and perform annual related party transaction review
  • Coordinate reporting efforts with internal stakeholders
  • Perform quality review checks on quarterly/annual statements and reconciliations on audit fees
  • Prepare/complete annual Fraud Risk Assessment
  • Assist as a backup for Financial Compliance Advisor
  • Other accountabilities/projects in Finance as required

WHAT WE NEED FROM YOU

  • Bachelor\xe2\x80\x99s degree in Commerce with a major in accounting, Business Administration, or an equivalent program
  • Minimum of 3 years of relevant work experience
  • CPA designation or in the process of completion
  • Technical knowledge of IFRS accounting standards
  • Knowledge of the practices and processes associated with internal and external audits as part of Sox compliance
  • Ability to communicate effectively with internal and external clients on complex matters, solving issues, and cross-functional collaboration
  • Ability to work on multiple projects concurrently
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Able to work equally well either within a team or independently with minimal supervision
  • Willing to work flexible hours as required to support the Financial Reporting team
  • Experience with Workiva to support compliance processes and reporting
