$36.28 per hour - $37.37 per hour (NEE: 18) to

$39.47 per hour - $40.65 per hour (NEE: 21)

the above rates subject to education and / or experience or a combination of both.

Malahat Nation represents approximately 350+ members with two reserve lands located on the western shore of Saanich Inlet, south of the village of Mill Bay, about 40-kilometres north of Victoria, British Columbia. Malahat Nation is looking for the right candidate to join our Community Programs Department. Malahat Nation places great importance on increasing the participation and success rates of Malahat Nation members in education, training, and development.

PURPOSE:

Reporting to the Director of Community Programs, the Adult Literacy Tutor will work directly with adult learners providing professional tutoring supports to increase reading, writing, math, computer and essential work skills at Malahat Nation. This role involves both one-on-one tutoring and the development and delivery of group-based literacy programs. This position is a part-time permanent position working 12-hours per week, working in the office, with local to moderate travel required.



RESPONSIBILITIES:


Work collaboratively within the Community Programs Department supporting the Adult Literacy portfolio teaching and tutoring adult learners often tailoring programs to the learner's specific needs, goals, and objectives Provide one-on-one or small group tutoring to adult learners in reading, writing and computer skills Develop and deliver group literacy programs and/or workshops i.e. financial literacy, budgeting, interview skills and navigating social sciences based on learner needs and interests Assess student literacy levels utilizing formal assessment tools such as CARA, CAMERA and informal, non-traditional trauma informed ways Integrate traditional teaching and community-building practices, such as circle discussions and respecting elders, to support learners Foster an inclusive environment by understanding and respecting the diversity of Indigenous cultures and knowledge systems Maintain accurate records of participant attendance and progress including but not limited to initial and final benchmarking Prepare and submit to the Director of Community Programs regular progress reports including quantitative measures, benchmarks, and qualitative narrative reporting Assist learners set short and long-term goals Select or develop appropriate teaching materials and resources Review work and assignments with the learner Work collaboratively with staff and partnering agencies to share resources and strategies Compliance with the Malahat Nation Financial Administration Law and Malahat Nation policies, including the Human Resources Policy Support with grant writing including interim and final reporting to program funders in collaboration with the Director of Community Programs and Director of Finance Maintain confidentiality of all learner information, in accordance with organizational policies and privacy standards Provide regular checks ins with the Director and / or designate Participate in training and staff meetings as required Other duties as assigned



REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:


Certificate or Diploma in Adult Education or related field; and / or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required Minimum two years experience in teaching, tutoring or working with adult learners preferably working in an indigenous community CPR and standard First Aid training required Valid BC Driver's License and reliable vehicle required Current Criminal Record Check (CRC) including vulnerable sector search prior to employment



OTHER EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:


Bachelor's Degree in Education, English, Adult Education or a related field is preferred Knowledge and experience working in an Indigenous community and a willingness to learn about Malahat culture, customs, and traditions is an asset

Strong communication and teamwork skills for effective collaboration Demonstrated problem-solving skills Demonstrated creative and motivating approaches to learning Familiarity with adult education curricula and tools is a benefit Be prepared for ongoing learning about Indigenous cultures and appropriate terminology Be adaptable to different learning environments, whether in person at a community center or online Ability to plan, prioritize, and manage time efficiently to meet deadlines Ability to adapt teaching methods to various learning styles and literacy levels Ability to carry out the duties of the position maintaining confidentiality relating to all files, participants, and programming Computer literacy and familiarity with virtual learning platforms Experience working with Indigenous communities and a commitment to incorporating Indigenous ways of knowing and traditional teachings into the curriculum Work in collaboration with Elders and knowledge keepers to ensure your teaching is respectful, culturally responsive and sensitive to diverse backgrounds and learning needs
