. Funded by the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training, and Skills Development, the Learning Alternatives Program offers individualized, non-accredited upgrading in reading, writing, numeracy, and digital technology. The instructor plays a key role in assessing learning needs, facilitating instruction, and preparing learners to pursue further education, employment, or independent living.
Key Responsibilities
Learner Assessment and Support
Conduct intake, ongoing, and exit assessments to identify learner goals, skill levels, and learning needs.
Develop and deliver customized learning plans that reflect OALCF competencies and individual learning styles.
Provide 1:1 and group instruction (in-person and virtual) in reading, writing, numeracy, and digital literacy (OALCF levels 1-3).
Align instruction with learner pathways (education, employment, or independence) and labour market trends.
Create and adapt instructional materials that reflect adult education principles and real-life applications.
Support learners in building communication, problem-solving, and self-management skills.
Monitor learner progress and provide regular, constructive feedback.
Actively participate in performance management and continuous program improvement.
Supervise students and volunteers when assigned.
Case Management and Documentation
Maintain accurate and timely records, including learning plans, case notes, progress reports, and assessments.
Ensure compliance with documentation standards in program databases (e.g., CaMS).
Enter and track performance metrics, attendance, and outcomes using Excel and agency systems.
Meet funder reporting deadlines and contribute to monthly and quarterly performance summaries.
Community Engagement and Administration
Work collaboratively with local Literacy and Basic Skills (LBS) and Employment Service providers.
Promote the program through outreach and marketing efforts in the community.
Represent JHS at workshops, community meetings, and sector events as required.
Contribute to agency and program development by identifying trends, gaps, and learner needs.
What We're Looking For
Education & Certifications
Post-secondary education in Education, Social Services, or a related field.
Experience & Skills
Proven experience in adult education, tutoring, or employment-focused facilitation.
Strong understanding of adult learning principles and the OALCF framework.
Proficiency in digital literacy, including Microsoft Office 365, Zoom, and online learning platforms.
Skilled in case management, learner assessment, and individualized planning.
Experience supporting learners from diverse backgrounds, including youth, newcomers, and individuals receiving OW, ODSP, or EI.
Familiarity with learning styles, learning disabilities, and strategies for inclusive instruction.
Advanced communication skills in reading, writing, grammar, and numeracy.
Strong organizational, time management, and problem-solving abilities.
Experience using social media tools (Facebook, Instagram, X, Hootsuite) and website platforms (WordPress).
Team-oriented, adaptable, and able to work independently.
Working Conditions
Interaction with adult learners, staff, visitors, and external stakeholders.
Possible exposure to infectious diseases in public settings.
Intermittent physical activity including walking, sitting, standing, and light lifting.
Manual dexterity required for computer use and classroom equipment.
Flexibility required to support learners in-person and virtually.
