Job Summary
Bring your keen eye for grammar to this fast-paced role and share your high-level editing skills to support the citizens of British Columbia Legislative editors support the legislative process in B.C. by helping to ensure editorial and publication work meets the high drafting and presentation standards for which B.C. legislation and publications are known. They employ their specialized expertise in textual interpretation and analysis to edit highly confidential draft legislation prepared by legislative counsel for presentation to the Legislative Assembly or Cabinet.

Legislative editors also prepare legislative material for publication, participate in statute revisions, track and record legislative changes to the statutes and regulations, and perform legislative research. Accuracy and attention to detail are critical components of the position: errors made or not detected may have extensive financial and policy repercussions. Legislative editors must often work under extreme time pressures that are not within their control yet be able to produce work of the highest quality. Overtime and working outside of regular business hours may be required.

Job Requirements:

  • University degree in English, Publishing or other related programs of study; OR,
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Extensive experience editing, proofreading and checking the accuracy of documents prepared by other professionals, including conducting related research and analysis.
  • Experience managing projects or project components.
  • Experience in desktop publishing and producing attractively formatted material for print and online publication.
Preference may be given to applicants with the following:
  • Training in communications strategies such as plain language and inclusive strategies. Experience with FrameMaker, Acrobat DC or other desktop publishing software and with FileMaker Pro or other database software.
Proviso: Overtime and working outside of regular business hours may be required.

About this Position:
Currently, there is one (1) temporary position available in Victoria. A permanent appointment may result from this temporary appointment.
Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work from home a few days a week subject to an approved telework agreement.
An eligibility list may be established to fill future temporary and permanent vacancies.
Employees of the BC Public Service must be located in BC at the time of employment.
This position is excluded from union membership.
