The Global Variable Annuity Hedging department is responsible for establishing and managing variable annuity dynamic hedge programs at Manulife Financial. This role is in the Investment Division and reports to the AVP of Actuarial Modelling, Global VA Hedging. It provides the opportunity to develop a strong understanding of various aspects of VA, such as product features, hedging strategies, financial reporting, capital, and modeling. It also provides the opportunity to learn about financial hedging and the derivatives market, as well as interact with many corporate areas and business units.

The Actuarial Modeling Team in Global VA Hedging, has the following mandate:

To be a source of actuarial expertise on all issues related to VA

Provide actuarial analysis of variable annuity products

Testing and implementation of changes to hedging models to extend modeling and hedging capabilities

Provide actuarial insights for hedging performance and developing hedging strategies

Interact with a number of group functions and business units

This role is ideal for individual who is highly motivated and would like to participate in high profile projects relating to VA hedging. The candidate will be expected to work in the Toronto office 3 days a week.

Responsibilities:

Support regular stress testing and reporting of liabilities and Greeks

Review daily hedging liability results and assist with performance attribution

Test and implement improvements to hedging models and daily hedging operations

Work with Strategy Team to develop and quantify impacts of new hedging strategies

Interact with Group Finance Actuarial, Capital, Corporate Risk, and Business Unit Valuation teams to validate and explain hedging results

Update and propose changes to the equity option hedging strategy, calibration methods and assumptions

Respond effectively to time sensitive requests for information from management

Work with Operations and Support teams to trouble shoot systems-related issues

Support analysis on the development of new hedging strategies as IFRS 17 approaches

Work on infrastructures changes on the path to IFRS 17 implementation

Assist with other VA hedging projects as needed

Qualifications:

Member of the SOA and progressing well with SOA exams

At least 2 years of actuarial work experience

Strong actuarial, analytical, and problem-solving skills

Process- and results-oriented with strong attention to details

Organized and able to manage complex processes

Proactive and able to work both independently and with teams

Good technical skills (Excel), programming (e.g. Python/VBA) and databases (e.g. SQL) will be an asset.
