Accountant

County of Wetaskiwin, Wetaskiwin, Alberta

The County of Wetaskiwin Finance Department is looking to find our new Accountant to join the team. You will bring your highly skilled accounting services to our enthusiastic team. This position reports to the Director of Finance and is responsible for providing all aspects of financial matters for the County along with supervision of staff.

The County of Wetaskiwin is located mid-point between Red Deer and Edmonton, and offers a variety of services to citizens in rural landscape of lakes, agriculture and residential subdivisions. We are known for the highest quality services and accurate and timely financial and management reports to Council. Providing these services in an effective and efficient manner ensures that municipal financial transactions and procedures are maintained, and systems data accuracy assured through Serenic software.

You will be responsible for interpreting financial information to facilitate decision making and participation in the budget process. In addition, providing budget assistance to the assigned business units and preparing departmental and consolidated financial statements while assisting in the development and maintenance of accounting procedures and internal controls.

The ideal candidate should be familiar with payrolls, audits, invoices, budget preparations, managing accounting activities including official returns and reconciliations. Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Assist with audit file preparation
  • Assist with yearly budget
  • Equipment Rate Revision and monthly entry
  • Fixed Asset System
  • Manage operations of the front counter
  • Prepare and submit WCB reconciliations, GST reconciliations, Federal and Provincial Statistical Returns, Provincial Statement of Funding & Expenditures and Sand and Gravel Survey
  • Bank reconciliations
  • General ledger and subsidiary ledger maintenance
  • Verification of gravel inventory and costing
  • Maintenance and completion of grants and reconciliation
  • Provide leadership and direction within the organization.
  • Supervise staff, including hiring, terminating, performance appraisals, orientation, training and disciplinary action.
Requirements:
  • Experience in a government accounting environment desirable, with a thorough knowledge of Serenic software is considered an asset.
  • Possess strong communication skills, written and oral.
  • A university degree in business and a professional accounting designation (C.P.A) is considered an asset.
  • An equivalent combination of management approved training and experience will be considered, and new graduates are encouraged to apply.
