Job Purpose
Reporting to the Accounting Manager (Canada), you will be responsible for processing bi-weekly payroll, day-to-day operational accounting, month-end close tasks, and financial reporting. The accountant will work closely with the operations team and will be responsible for accurate and timely internal financial reporting to senior management. Working in a small, but growing team, this is a key role that will require an entrepreneurial mind-set to assist with strengthening the control environment, driving process improvements, expanding system utilization, and assisting with other tasks on an as needed basis as we continue to grow.
Key Accountabilities/Deliverables
Process bi-weekly payroll, maintain accurate employee records, ensure compliance with federal, provincial and local regulations.
Serve as back up resource for Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable roles, ensuring continuity of operations during team member absences.
Understand the financial statement numbers to discuss rationally and succinctly
Create and maintain monthly accounting tasks calendar; ensure that timelines are being adhered to and communicated to managers
Complete balance sheet reconciliations at month end; advise and assist Accounting Manager and Corporate Controller on complex accounting matters
Support the annual audit and quarterly reviews by providing documentation as requested
Maintain accounting records and ensure financial control policies are adhered to; report lack of compliance with financial controls to Accounting Manager and Corporate Controller
Assist with the creation of training manuals and process workflows
Implement, review, document and improve accounting process flow; liaise with operations team to ensure process flow is efficient and makes sense for the business
Assist with AR collection calls as needed
Assist with ERP implementation, maintenance and enhancement projects
Build strong working relationships with operations, IT, internal and external stakeholders
Develop and report on a set of operational accounting KPI's
Perform general office duties and other tasks as requested
Key Competencies/Qualifications
A minimum of 1-3 years' experience in management accounting and financial reporting
Completion of a recognized payroll designation is preferred but not required.
Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience required; completion of CPA or enrollment in the program will be advantageous
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Ability to identify problems and provide solutions
Strong interpersonal skills to build relationships with internal stakeholders, staff, auditors
Knowledge of provincial payroll legislation and systems
Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel; proficient in use of Microsoft Word, Powerpoint and Outlook
Self-starter, driven and motivated to work independently with little oversight; ability to develop and implement strategies
Knowledge of ERP systems, AP automation software and other modern accounting software
Demonstrated knowledge of change management
Keen sense of curiosity and an ability to research, analyze data and explain numbers
Experience working in a fast-paced environment and able to deal with change
